Rhule's staff is almost complete so let's make some predictions on how much of that $7 million each coach will be getting (I'm basing this off of $7mil for 10 position coaches as written in the contract, so not including strength coach).

Co-OC/TE: Marcus Satterfield - $800,000
Co-OC/QB: Jake Peetz - $850,000
WR:
OL:
RB:
E.J Barthel - $300,00-$400,000

DC:
DB:
Evan Cooper - $400,000-$500,000
DL: Terrance Knighton - $300,000-$400,000
LB:
Special Teams:
Ed Foley - $400,000-$500,000

These numbers add to $3.05 million on the low end up to $3.45 million on the high end, giving us $3.5-4 million left for the remaining positions. Assuming these figures are close to accurate, a few predictions:

1) We will not hit the $7 million figure allowed in the contract. No chance we'd spend an average of $1 million on each of the remaining 4 positions.
2) We can, and likely will, try to go big on DC. I would guess upwards of $1.5 million.
3) After DC, the next highest price hire will be OL. Hopefully Rhule has a "big fish" in his sights there. It certainly seems like we can afford it.

I think Satterfield has to be higher. He was making $900,000 at South Carolina. I can understand the shift from coaching QBs to TEs shifts responibilities and might justify a slight dock in pay, but Nebraska still has to financially justify pulling from SCar. Thamel said they made a strong push to keep him, which makes me assume they countered our initial offer.

I had similar numbers for the others. Peetz is the hardest to read since I don't know what his salary was before and he jumps around constantly. I had him in the $400,000-$550,000 range. He was terminated after one year into a two year contract at LSU. He could have been happy to soak in the McVey influence and knowledge for low pay for a year while enjoying the buyout liquidations for his second contractual year. I also don't know what his responsibilities will be beyond QBs. Whatever the special teams deal could be might bump it beyond that.

I had $1,000,000 for AHC/WR set for Mickey, but that's obviously botched now. The main thing is I wanted to try and justify $850,000 or so for an OL coach. I think that or maybe a little more could entice someone like Joe Rudolph to come this way. That gets easier if we're not worried about trying to make our WR coach a millionaire.

Full predictions:

OC / TE - Satterfield: $1,100,000
QB - Pietz: $450,000
WR - VACANT: $500,000
OL - VACANT*: $850,000
RB - Barthel: $350,000
DC - VACANT**: $1,700,000
DB/RC - Cooper: $450,000
LB - VACANT: $450,000
DL - Knighton: $400,000
ST - Foley: $400,000

With some give and take between some areas depending on who the other names could be.

In the stupid chance S&C is also included in that $7,000,000 pool, those numbers leave $350,000 for Corey Campbell. Otherwise that cash can be spread around however it's needed.

* Hoping for Joe Rudolph or someone with that amount of money.
** That would be $200,000 more than what Leonhard was currently making at Wisconsin. Might be enough to swing him. Or maybe it would be needed to get Geoff Collins.

Yeah no way the co-oc makes more than the actual oc.

But they'd both be Co-OCs in that scenario so I would imagine their salaries would be similar.

It may be a bad assumption on my part thinking that Peetz will be given a Co-OC title. If he is just QB coach than the number would likely be closer to Jank's prediction.

I hope I’m dead fucking wrong but he’s recruiting currently
IMO, unless your Whipple and are out to door to retirement and don't give a shit anymore, a coach is going to keep doing his job until he's told he doesn't have that job anymore. I also tend to trust the local media steam that there will be no staff hold-overs from last year. Say what you will about the local media, but we're not in the lock-down, top secret, search firm assisted head coach search anymore. There are guys out there who have decent sources for this kind of info.

The biggest thing that gives me pause though is the fact that we have heard nothing, and I mean literally nothing, about potential names for the job.

After reading Geoff Collins bio, give him all the money please.

I’d be curious if Jim Leonhard even entertained a DC job in the B10.
Right on Collins. For Leonhardt, what better way to screw those backstabbers Wisconsin than to be the DC at Nebraska? But maybe he will go the Packers. Regardless, a fine DC who Rhule should go after, and if it doesn't work out then go get Collins.

So assuming the LB coach stuff is correct that’s another relatively low salary assistant. Added to my predictions that looks like:

Co-OC/TE: Marcus Satterfield - $900,000
Co-OC/QB: Jake Peetz - $850,000
WR:
OL:
RB:
E.J Barthel - $300,00-$400,000

DC:
DB:
Evan Cooper - $400,000-$500,000
DL: Terrance Knighton - $300,000-$400,000
LB: Rob Dvoracek - $300,000-$350,000
Special Teams: Ed Foley - $400,000-$500,000

Even going by the high end of these predictions would leave us with just over $3 million to spend on 3 remaining assistants. To me this means one of three things:

1) We have some big fish lined up for the last few spots.
2) We are going to over pay under qualified assistants to get closer to $7 million.
3) We are going to go cheap overall and not approach the allotted $7 million.

Hopefully it’s #1

I think he was anticipating paying Mickey 1mil. Then 2 mil for a dc and oline.
