Q&A, Ask a Football Rules, Situation, Philosophy, or Call Question

Believe it or not the BIG is one of the more desirable conferences to officiate in. They've done quite a few playoff and national championship games and have quite a few crews working bowl games. Not just that the BIG is tied into the MAC and Missouri Valley for development. So there are a lot of desirable games in the lower levels too.

But to answer the question, getting to a D1 level is extremely long process and even at that it's who you know at right time. Working Missouri Valley would be great. It's even a little harder now with the politics of the Big. They're really at filling up with women and minorities. The woman who called safety in Illinois had 2 years of high school experience before landing in the Big. That's normally a 12 to 20 year process.
How much do officials make roughly?

Like class A, lower level college, P5, etc....

Varsity high school - we are $100 per game for Class A and B. Some smaller and remote schools are up to $140/game.

BIG practice - $150 practice plus training table. $300 scrimmage plus training table.

NAIA - $210/game cover own travel and food, playoff hotels and expenses are covered.

D2 - I believe they're $350/game now. Cover own expenses except playoffs.

FCS - around $600 to $800. Travel covered.

MAC - Last I heard $1200/game plus expenses paid.

P5 - I think they're $3,000/game plus travel expenses paid.

Seems like this isn't worth it almost. You would think given the travel aspect they would pay more or cover the travel. Jmo

If you can get to the NFL the money is really good. They're up to about 200k for a few hours of work plus travel time 17 weekends a year. Granted they have meetings and training throughout the rest of the year but that isn't much.

I always shook my head at the NFL owners when the refs went on strike (which I don’t blame them for) and the owners tried to make a stand and were fine with replacement refs. 🤦🏼‍♂️

That's the tough part. You have to suffer through these levels to make your way up there.

NAIA is typically a 12 to 14 hour day with travel included. Concordia/Doane/Midland a few hours less.

MIAA/D2 is longer. Some games could be overnight Friday and 6 to 8 hours one way trips. A lot of those are traveling alone. Could be looking at trips of 20+ hours. Only 3 schools within a 2 1/2 to 3 hour one way.

Ya that is a grind it sounds like.

Here's one for you guys which should have been called back.

Got sent this clip this morning. This should be an illegal formation - 5 in backfield. LOS officials can put WRs on or off to make sure it's a legal formation, but in this case there is no way of doing that. The inside WR is clearly on, outside WR and inside WR are clearly off (both on same yard line). As an official, you cannot put one of those on for legal formation and keep other off.

I referenced in another post on Harbaugh lighting up 5 officials before a kickoff, this is the play prior, now I see why he was livid and rightfully so.

My bet is the WR at the bottom of the screen is supposed to be on the LOS. Given how the #2 was blocking.

Knowing the play/formation and how they screwed it up in fall camp so many times, it's supposed to be the outside and middle WR on the LOS.
That makes sense.

Lining up like this can cause the defense head aches, but it also requires your offense to be not stupid.

How is this roughing the passer?

I thought it was a weak call initially, but the angle from the back shows him lift Allen up and drive him into the ground. So I guess I sort of understand why they called it, but the rule is stupid as fuck.

It's not but NFL is so over the top. Regardless Chiefs got their asses kicked last night.
Ya, I agree. This wiped out a pick though. It is a different game if the Chiefs have the ball in + territory down by 2 scores (iirc it was like 12).

Chiefs need to stop turning the damn ball over so much.

NFL is stricter on roughing the passer. The initial hit was fine, it was when he lifted and drove him into the ground with his shoulder. Not much there, but I guess enough to warrant a flag by NFL standards.

lol, that's pretty good.

I've actually called this in a high school game once and I know a Nebraska defensive player was warned this fall for it.

Page FR-79 Rule 7-1-5-a5
"No player shall use words or signals that disconcert opponents when they are preparing to put the ball in play. No player may call defensive signals that simulate the sound or cadence of, or otherwise interfere with, offensive starting signals"
PENALTY [4-5]—Dead-ball foul, delay of game. Five yards from the succeeding spot [S21].

My question with that is when the offense decides to clap to snap the ball, does that mean the defense is not allowed to clap at all? The defense also can't hear anything and may be trying to get the attention of other players, so why wouldn't they be allowed to do some sort "signal" such as clapping to get other players' attention?
