Portal Season Thread

The fact that there are 2 pages worth of events has to be a record.

At least he's gotten to travel the country?
And there are some missing like when he opted out last year and declared for the draft and when he went to Juco at Arizona Western, Etc.

I never saw it with him. He'd flash and then disappear. Quick first step but that seemed to be it.

I was really excited about him. He definitely flashed but I'd chalk the disappearing act up to rotations. I thought he was really solid in the role they had him. Can't blame him for wanting to be an every down player but I am bummed to lose him.

Visiting this weekend

Nebraska will host Akron quarterback transfer Zach Gibson on an official visit this weekend, he told 247Sports.

“Getting the opportunity to see a place with that kind of tradition, it’s a blessing,” Gibson said. “My family and I are super excited."

Gibson is one of the more intriguing names in the transfer portal. He wasn’t a full-time starter for the Zips last year. But he played like one of the nation’s elite quarterbacks while he was on the field, drawing a 91.2 PFF College Grade for the season.

The 6-foot-3, 209-pound redshirt sophomore finished the 2021 season throwing for 1,262 yards and 10 touchdowns without an interception. He also averaged eight yards attempt. Gibson has drawn an 87 rating from 247Sports’ transfer ranking team, which ranks him as the sixth-best quarterback currently in the transfer portal just behind Myles Brennan and Jake Haener.

Nebraska needs to dip into the transfer portal at quarterback after four-year starter Adrian Martinez decided to exit the program last week. Other quarterbacks on Nebraska’s roster include Logan Smothers, who earned the start in the Huskers' regular-season finale with Martinez out with an injury, and 2021 signee Heinrich Haarberg.

Another school in the mix for Gibson is Georgia Tech. Gibson is supposed to meet with the Yellowjackets on Thursday in Atlanta. His brother, Tyler, is an offensive tackle commit in the Yellowjackets’ 2022 class.

The Yellowjackets are also looking for a long-term answer at quarterback. Neither Jeff Sims nor Jordan Yates were able to lock down that job full-time last season with Sims dealing with a litany of injuries.

An Alpharetta, Georgia native, Gibson signed with Akron as part of the 2019 class. He ranked as the No. 2,258 overall player in the country, per the 247Sports Composite, holding FBS offers from the Zips and Georgia State.

While a player entering their name in the transfer portal means they intend to explore their options, it does not necessarily mean they will leave. A player is free to withdraw his name at any time. However, schools are under no obligation to keep a player on scholarship once they enter the portal.

There were 2,646 FBS players to enter the transfer portal during the 2020-21 transfer cycle, per a source. That's up from 1,692 in 2019-20 and 1,717 in 2018-19.

That increase can at least partially be credited to the NCAA's new policy that student-athletes are allowed to transfer once in their careers without having to sit out a year-in-residence. That means all players who enter the transfer portal for the first time will be immediately eligible at their new school as long as they meet a NCAA mandated entry deadline.
