Just an old school transfer that has to sit out a year. He can be on scholarship, be on the team, practice, just can't play for a year.

Using the portal just waives the sit out year.

They do it through the portal, which allows you to play right away. But the portal is only open a couple weeks in December and a couple weeks in April. This guy, leaving LSU in August, obviously did not use the portal so he has to sit a year.
