I’m fine with G5 team(s) being in 🤷🏻♂️
I'm think I'm fine with it most of the time, too.
The reason G5 gets a reseved spot is because we've had several years when you have an undefeated G5 team like Bosie State or Coastal Carolina or (
whispers: UCF) who hammered everyone on their schedule, and perhaps a P4 team or two. I'm fine with a team that has passed every test so far getting a shot to prove it against the big boys. Who knows? Maybe they are good enough to hang. We have no evidence that they can't.
But when your G5 rep is a Tulane who lost a P4 game by 35 as well as losing to Texas-San Antoinio by 22, or if you lost to the 8th place ACC team by two touchdowns (as JMU did)... I'm no longer curious to see if you can hang with the big dogs since that question was pretty much answered during the regular season. I'm fine with G5 being excluded then.
Of course, you can't make it policy that an G5 team has to be undeafeted to qualify for the playoffs because that would incentivize weak scheduling. So I guess I'm getting back to being OK wiith one team, the highest ranked G5, quaifying. (Though if there are no G5 teams ranked, you're out.)
Of course, the real source of the problem is the ACC tiebreaker that allowed a 5-loss team to win their conference and opened the door to a second G5 qualifier this year.
