I know you guys love these -

Here are the final snap counts and grades for Nebraska’s offense in its 31-28 loss to Northwestern, courtesy of Pro Football Focus (PFF).

Quarterback

PlayerSnapsPass playsRun playsOverall grade
Casey Thompson – Jr.7442184.1
Logan Smothers – So.10167.6
Take: Quarterback Casey Thompson had an 82.9 passing grade against Northwestern even after throwing two interceptions and having one passing touchdown to boost his score. He ran the ball once, on a quarterback keep at the goal line for a touchdown in the second quarter. The Texas transfer earned a 62.8 rushing grade and a 69.8 fumble grade.

In his first game as a Husker, Thompson passed better under pressure or when he was blitzed than not, scoring in the high 80s in both categories. He excelled when making throws from 10-19 yards and earned a 90.8 grade on his medium passes.

Of Thompson’s 42 passes, 14 were dropped by his receiver and 25 were completions. That leaves those two interceptions – one a tipped ball and the other a bad call – and another bad pass.

Nebraska QB Thompson draws praise from Frost, but the coach makes clear that the Texas transfer faces a learning curve in the Big Ten

Running back

PlayerSnapsRun playsPass playsOverall grade
Anthony Grant – Jr.51173176.3
Jaquez Yant – So.116058.6
Ajay Allen – Fr.134062.3
Take: JUCO product Anthony Grant got the start after a competitive fall camp and earned 94 rushing yards on 17 carries. His run grade tallied to 81.2 with a 59.2 run block grade. After contact, the 2021 Junior College Offensive Player of the Year had 66 yards. Grant had two touchdowns including a 46-yarder to capitalize on Nebraska’s fumble recovery in the third quarter.

Outside of Grant, the Huskers had 21 total yards on eight carries from sophomore Jaquez Yant and freshman Ajay Allen.

Wide Receiver

PlayerSnapsTargetsCatchesDropsOverall grade
Trey Palmer – Jr.48138166.2
Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda – Jr.3474070.1
Marcus Washington – Jr.5242155.8
Alante Brown – So.3433060.9
Brody Belt – Jr.922078.4
Wyatt Liewer – Jr.710150.2
Oliver Martin – Sr.2010047.1
Take: New Mexico State transfer Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda led Nebraska with 120 receiving yards on four catches. Trey Palmer had a team-high 13 targets with eight catches and 67 yards. Palmer (slot) and Marcus Washington (wide) played the most snaps at receiver.

Garcia-Castaneda was the only wide receiver with a reception of over 20 yards thanks to a 58-yard bomb from Thompson. Brody Belt caught a 19-yarder.

Five things we learned from Nebraska’s loss to Northwestern

Tight end

PlayerSnapsTargetsCatchesRun block gradeOverall grade
Travis Vokolek – Sr.49558187.5
Nate Boerkircher – RFr.271058.461.4
Chancellor Brewington – Sr.160047.349.4
Take: Senior tight end Travis Vokolek had a huge first half before he went down clutching his left ankle in the third quarter and didn’t return. Vokolek caught all five balls thrown his way for 64 yards and five first downs.

Austin Allen, who is now with the New York Giants, was Nebraska’s go-to receiver in big moments and it seems Vokolek is that man this season. He said after the game that he expects his ankle to be fine.

Redshirt freshman Nate Boerkircher came in when Vokolek went down and had one target that he tipped above his head and was almost picked off.

Offensive line

PlayerSnapsPressuresRunPassOverall grade
Teddy Prochazka – So.751 QB hit, 7 hurries46.424.538.5
Turner Corcoran – So.752 hurries49.431.648.4
Trent Hixson – Sr.7555.955.656.4
Broc Bando – Sr.5652.271.756.5
Henry Lutovsky – RFr.193 hurries6015.449.9
Bryce Benhart – So.751 hurry53.170.360.1
Hunter Anthony – Jr.248.153.7
Ethan Piper – So.258.459.5
Take: Nebraska’s offensive line didn’t give up a sack or have a penalty. Both center Trent Hixson and right guard Broc Bando didn’t allow a single quarterback pressure. Bryce Benhart and Turner Corcoran (now at left guard) were the two of the worst tackles in college football in terms of pressures allowed and gave up three against Northwestern.

Northwestern’s Adetomiwa Adebawore, who ranked No. 2 in Nebraska On3’s Ranking the Big Ten pass rushers, had four total pressures with a 74 grade against the Huskers.

Defensive front

PlayerSnapsRun DefenseTacklingPass RushOverall
Garrett Nelson7153.160.356.354.3
Ty Robinson7143.272.461.041.4
Colton Feist6466.855.854.863.3
Caleb Tannor6463.177.957.863.2
Ochaun Mathis3677.278.465.976.8
Nash Hutmacher2653.021.466.457.1
Devin Drew2458.2N/A57.157.4
Stephon Wynn Jr.2061.2N/A64.564.1
Take: It’s no secret that the Huskers’ pass rush was nonexistent on Saturday, and the PFF grades certainly back that up. The Blackshirts only generated eight quarterback hurries and failed to deliver any QB hits, let alone a sack. Compare those numbers to a year ago against the Wildcats where Nebraska had 17 hurries, four hits and three sacks.

Devin Drew received four more snaps than Stephon Wynn despite Drew’s late arrival at camp. Ochaun Mathis saw nearly half as many snaps as Colton Feist and Caleb Tannor. Lastly, the team’s highest pass rush grade belongs to corner Tommi Hill at 73.0.

Steven Sipple: It’s not even September, and an unpleasant conversation regarding Nebraska’s 2022 football season already is upon us

Linebackers/Nickel

PlayerSnap CountRun DefenseTacklingPass RushOverall
Nick Henrich7636.326.155.831.1
Luke Reimer7242.773.856.242.6

Chris Kolarevic1660.035.5N/A62.1
Eteva Mauga-Clements1364.677.268.5
Ernest Hausmann964.477.755.6
Take: Nick Henrich turned in one of the worst performances of his career on Saturday. The only game that graded worse was the season opener against Ohio State in 2020 during which the linebacker saw 25 snaps. The captain missed just over 40% of his tackles and surrendered a team-high 97 yards in coverage.

Luke Reimer was much more productive. The junior led the team in tackles with 10 and only gave up 38 yards in coverage. Nickel Isaac Gifford had the best grade of the group at 68.7, and was tested the most with seven targets.

Tackling, physicality now major concerns for Blackshirts

Secondary

PlayerSnapsRun DefenseTacklingCoverageOverall
Marques Buford Jr.8589.269.835.254.4
Quinton Newsome8571.367.378.278.3

Tommi Hill6484.181.770.077.7
Braxton Clark2161.173.560.661.8
Omar Brown260.0N/A60.060.0
Take: Marques Buford and Quinton Newsome are the only Huskers that played all 85 defensive snaps. Newsome received the most attention from the Wildcat offense drawing four targets. Buford, on the other hand, gave up 46 yards in coverage on two targets.

Hill had the team’s second-highest defensive grade at 77.7 and Newsome claimed the top performance with a 78.3. Myles Farmer gave up two catches on two targets for 28 yards.

predicted us getting our taints split open by a bunch of chess playing nerds from northwestern
Did you see my season prediction when I said we would lose to those nerds....or that I've been debbie downer the whole off-season...

For Reference. Although I'm thinking Buttgers beats us now. Schiano will dick slap Frost more than likely.

Pretty close to what I’m thinking.

Purple Nerds - L
Butthole Dakota - W
Fighting Heltons - W
Fighting Booger Shugas - L
Basketball School - W
Buttgers - W
Purdoodoo - L
Fat Berts. L after bye
Fighting PeeJays - L
Meatchicken - L
Wisky - L
Pickle Smoochers Cockeyes - L

4-8, possibly 5-7 if beat the fat Berts or purple nerds.

There is no way they even have the correct game tape to do the evaluation so soon (or ever?), even ignoring the several other problems
They don't have any All-22s. They go off the TV broadcast. So how the hell are you supposed to even remotely have any idea. They don't show every player on a given play half the time.

And they way they chart positions and who plays. Is absolutely ridiculous. I thought about trying to do it as a side gig, figured it would be easy. They give you 3 games to chart, and you put who was in and what position they started in, within some ridiculous standards that make no damn sense, in any football world. And the game films they gave you to use, were legit, the broadcast angles, which are complete trash if you're trying to accurately chart where dudes align and even numbers of players sometimes. So how the hell are they going to accurately chart/grade players. It's a complete fucking joke. I should go find that PFF handbook they sent me and post it here. It's laughable.

I don’t even care where the Buttgers game is, we lose that and Turd better fire Frost after the hand shake

Yeah, I assumed they never got the all 22s. I also sort of always wondered about the quality of graders and the required qualifications. Like does one guy do the whole game, or do they split it up based on the grader’s specialties? I also assume there is a lot of pressure to get the grades out soon rather than to get them perfect

I have that one predicted as a loss. (I’ve had it that way for awhile) A couple reasons:

1. Greg Schiano is a better coach than Scott Frost
2. Low key Buttgers is building. They’ve been recruiting well. They have more talent than you think.
3. We suck on the road / awkward type games.

Noah Vedral could beat us…wouldn’t that be something

Some interesting stuff here.

Lutovsky played and transfer Williams didn't, which is a little different than the preseason insider reports that we were getting.

Ajay Allen played a lot for a true freshman in his first ever game.

Teddy had a bad night to say the least.

Liewer did what he always does.

I honestly don't think there would be any difference if you substituted me for Nick Heinrich. I can also miss tackles and run behind guys catching passes and gaining yards.

One positive was that Benhart actually looked like the guy I thought we were getting. He played a pretty solid game.

Upon further examination.....

Why is TE Chris Hickman still on scholarship?
Why is DB N. Pola Gates still on scholarship?
