I like Barthel. There's a reason Texas tried to poach him last year. You can't say "Holgorsen is past his prime, the OL sucks, Nebraska doesn't throw vertically to back safeties up etc etc etc" and then not give credit to Barthel for helping Johnson become an All American. Someone had to do something right for that to happen.
I thought Satterfield might move on, the money they are saving with his pay cut should go to defensive linemen. The money they are saving with DL coach should go to defensive linemen. The money they are saving by promoting Josh Martin to STC (this is an assumption) should also go to defensive linemen.

No that report was two years ago when our staff was still intact from the first hire. I compared the sums to the combined current salary list from OWH and others, and our total on salaries for ACs and coordinators is still WAY behind the big boy salaries totals FROM TWO YEARS AGO >>>>>>>
A low 3 star that Ron Brown personally worked the staff from the prior administration to recruit and acquire, and then worked with him for nearly two years, that guy, EJ. Not Barthel's guy, not Barthel's work.
How exactly do you imagine practices went in your head? Barthel working with all the RBs and EJ working with Brown on the side? Barthel fisting his butt and Brown working with all the RBs?
All I know is that Barthel and Brown worked with RBs in most practices.

Unfortunately the $$ for coaches and the $$ for players (defensive lineman) are in NO WAY related.
2025 - 2026 Football Salaries thru June 2026. $22M total. No new coaches or raises listed.

Usually, you want poorly endowed teams. That means you're injecting the good stuff.

I'll die on this hill, but Barthel had minimal to do with Johnson and it was pretty much all Holgo and his change in philosophy of what he wanted from the RBs.
I'll also die on the hill that there's no way we "almost lost Barthel to Texas" for the 2025 season and then they had another chance to hire him this year and still didn't despite him "developing" an All-American RB.
Lastly, who is the best RB recruit Barthel has brought in? 2023 - Ives 2024 - No one 2025 - Parker/Booth 2026 - Rule?
There are a few assistant coaches we've had that will be (or were) tough to replace, we would be fine if Barthel left us tomorrow. We are now rolling into 2026 with a coaches son and a walk-on for our 1A and 1B at his position group. RB room is thinner than a bookmark heading into this season. The good news is I think you can have an average RB look good if the line plays like they should.

I don’t know, man. Barthel has done such an amazing job with the RBs that we graduated an all-conference guy and didn’t even need to hit the portal to be elite next year.
Based on those kinds of savings, he might be the most valuable coach on campus.
