Had a similar moment with my son (the USS Clueless) when he was learning to drive. He had his learner's permit, and we allowed him to drive Mrs. LHR's Mercedes to a store to do some shopping for my daughter.

Us: "You coming in?"
Him: "No, I'll just wait in the car"

A few minutes later, we're surprised to see him standing beside us in the store.

Us: "What happened to waiting in the car?"
Him: "I got bored and decided to come in and look around"
Us: "No problem. Can I have the key fob to the car?"
Him: ____________
Us: You did lock the car, didn't you?
Him: ____________
Everyone turns to the window, and there's the car running with the lights on in the parking lot, key fob left securely in the cupholder in the vehicle.
Me: "The USS Clueless has set sail again ..." and I walked out to shut off the vehicle and lock it, like a responsible person would.
