Charlie Thom lining up an OV, date not yet set. He has 16 offers since 5/19.
Barthel had Thom do a broad jump, a key metric for lower body explosiveness for Nebraska’s staff. Standing 6-foot-6, 270 pounds, Thom jumped 9’3”, which would have been tied for fourth-best of all offensive linemen at the 2025 NFL Combine. “He was blown away,” Thom said. “I think he was just real excited.”

It’s been an offseason of growth for 2026 Avon (Conn.) Old Farms offensive tackle Charlie Thom, a former tight end prospect who has reclassified from the class of 2025 and is in the process of learning a new position.
Thom had seen some FBS interest as a tight end over the last year, but Power Four programs indicated a position switch would generate more interest. After the 2024 season, a conversation with the Avon Olds Farms coaching staff convinced him to make the switch.
Since then, Thom has been dialed in on learning offensive line technique, and adding significant mass to his frame. He admits learning how to pass set has been the most difficult part of the position switch. After a full spring of drilling the technique, now more than 15 pounds heavier than he was at the end of the 2024 season, the light bulb fully came on for Thom during his first live reps.
“We had a couple of these showcases,” he said. “We did these 1v1s, it was like the first time I did live reps, and it was kind of crazy because I was, I wouldn't say dominating, but I did pretty well against these kids and that was my first time ever doing the pass setting stuff.”
Earlier this month, Thom caught the attention of Nebraska running backs coach
EJ Barthel at a college showcase.
“He really liked how I moved at the showcase,” Thom said. “He actually pulled me aside after we finished our drills and he was like ‘take me to your mom right now.’”
After meeting Thom and talking to his parents, Barthel had Thom do a broad jump, a key metric for lower body explosiveness for Nebraska’s staff. Standing 6-foot-6, 270 pounds, Thom jumped 9’3”, which would have been tied for fourth-best of all offensive linemen at the 2025 NFL Combine.
“He was blown away,” Thom said. “I think he was just real excited.”
Thom left the showcase with an offer from Barthel to come to Nebraska, his first Big Ten offer. The Huskers, namely Barthel, have made him feel like a priority target, despite already having an established board of 2026 offensive line targets.
“Coach Barthel said he’s going to be on me like bees on honey,” Thom said. “So he’s been reaching out pretty frequently, calling my parents too.”
He added.
“We’ve been talking a lot. He’s definitely doing a great job as a recruiter.”
Thom has seen his recruitment take off over the last month or so and is still processing the new offers and attention. To date, he has one official visit set up for June scheduled for June 13-15. He plans to camp at Notre Dame and Penn State. The Nittany Lions have shown interest as of late and could be next to offer. Since Nebraska offered, he’s added another Big Ten offer from Michigan State, along with offers from Boston College and Notre Dame. Schools like Virginia Tech and Syracuse are also in the running.
Thom says he plans to visit Nebraska at least once in June, ideally aiming for a feel-out unofficial visit, then a return official visit later in the month, but noted if he’s only able to visit once, it’ll likely be an official visit.
