Chinander said NU worked on some team passing game reps and second-and-long situational work.
***Chinander said the staff saw “glimpses” of what Caleb Tannor could be last season, but he started to show what he was capable of in the spring.
Chinander praised Tannor’s effort and leadership this offseason and said it’s been “fun” to watch him play, especially when he turns the corner while rushing the passer.
***Chinander said as far as speed and movement were concerned, Tannor was “probably at the top” of his EDGE position group.
***Chinander said he felt good about Nebraska’s depth at EDGE and hinted they could play Tannor, Garret Nelson, and Ochaun Mathis together in certain packages.
“If you’re a good coach, you put your best players on the field,” he said.
***Chinander said Mathis was still adjusting to Nebraska’s strength and conditioning requirements and the different style of play in the Big Ten. However, he noted Mathis was getting better by the day and had embraced the challenge of making his mark as a Husker.
***Chinander said the improvements made on the defensive line and their talent at EDGE would likely allow the defense to do some “different things” with their pass rush this season on second and third downs.
But he added that NU would still do a lot of the same things it did last season, and the defense just needed to make more plays (turnovers, sacks, TFLs, etc.).
***Chinander said there was “great competition” at every position in the secondary and that it would be very hard for him and defensve backs coach Travis Fisher to narrow down a group of 4-5 starters for Northwestern.
He thinks NU will be able to rotate more at safety because of the depth they have there now compared to last season.
***Chinander was looking forward to when Nebraska started live tackling in camp because that would “separate the men from the boys” in some of these position battles.
Chinander said the Huskers would begin tackling next week in either practice five or six, and then they would hold their first live scrimmage on practice nine.
***Chinander confirmed that defensive back Javin Wright had been “100% cleared” to practice this fall. Wright had missed significant time with health and injury issues the past few years, but Chinander was excited to see what he could do now that he was finally healthy.
***Chinander said Ty Robinson had a “good year” in 2021, but now the defensive lineman “has an opportunity to have a special year.” Chinander’s goal for Robinson is to create more “splash” plays and know when to take his shots better.
***Chinander said Myles Farmer and Quinton Newsome had arguably been the top secondary leaders this offseason. He said they took it upon themselves to hold their own DB film sessions and take the younger guys under their wings.
Chinander added that a player couldn’t lead like that “until you’re getting your work done,” and they were both getting their work done.
***Chinander said Farmer had “a good feel for the game” and was very good in zone coverage. He still needs to improve his man coverage and tackling, but Chinander called Farmer a “well-rounded player” who didn’t have any glaring weakness.
***Fisher said Wright had an interception on the first day of camp and called him a top-five film study guy in the room.
***Fisher said Newsome always sat in the front row during film sessions, but on the first day of camp, Newsome picked up all of his stuff and sat by freshman Malcolm Hartzog to help him along.
***Fisher said the older defensive backs get in trouble with him if he asks them where their younger teammates are, and they don’t know.
***On what it would take for Newsome to become a “dominant” cornerback, Fisher said he’d need to be Cam Taylor-Britt “and better.”
***Fisher said Marques Buford’s effort was “unmatchable” and that he “out-efforted” everyone in the room. Buford is playing strictly safety right now but can move to other positions if needed.
***Fisher said the best leaders in his room were Newsome, Farmer, Buford, and Tommi Hill. Fisher said Hill still didn’t know everything about the defense yet, but he was already the loudest voice and the “most passionate” defensive back on the team.
***Robinson said he’d taken it upon himself to be an enforcer of sorts on and off the field to ensure his teammates did what they were supposed to do at all times.
***Robinson said two players he was the most excited to see develop this fall were Nash Hutmacher and Colton Feist. Robinson called Feist the “sleeper” of the defensive line who would get his shot in games this season.
***Robinson said Feist had some of the best technique on the d-line and had the “motor” to separate him from many other players.
