Official Fall Practice Thread

Nebraska held its 11th practice Wednesday at Memorial Stadium. This also marked the last open practice of fall camp, with the next time being in Ireland that the Huskers play without being behind closed doors.
Inside Nebraska was present for the 30-minute open practice as Nebraska did their routine warmup and individual drills. Here is what stood out from the defensive side.
>> It was announced yesterday across social media channels that Texas Tech transfer Devin Drew made it to Lincoln and he was suited up in full pads for Wednesday's practice. The 6'2, 280 pound junior was in full force and looking the part as the defensive linemen participated in some blocking sled drills. He has some really good size as well and should provide some much needed services as a gap filler up front.
>> We've all heard the talk about Nash Hutmacher this off season and he furthered that talking point this morning, receiving good comments from defensive line coach Mike Dawson while on the blocking sled. Clearly, Hutmacher has size and his added reach really showed on the drill, as he should be able to generate plenty of space off the line.
>> Before their team-wide warmup, secondary coach Travis Fisher was working with the defensive backs on play recognition. More specifically, adjusting to when wide receivers were put in motion. Out of the bunch, Ohio State transfer Tyreke Johnson and sophomore Javier Morton were the most vocal during the drill.
>> Additionally, during the same drill there was a couple of interesting safety combinations. Myles Farmer and Omar Brown were one combo while Deshon Singleton and Noa Pola-Gates the other. Fisher mentioned a couple days ago that Brown would see some time at safety and that was proven Wednesday.
>> Nickel Javin Wright was also working with the defensive backs and sometimes as the No. 1 DB in the slot. On the other hand, Isaac Gifford was slotted in as the No. 1 Nickel at some points throughout as well.
>> Wednesday also saw Nebraska go through "live reps" of special teams as said by Bill Busch. That also saw defensive back and Arizona State transfer Tommi Hill in the gunner spot on the punt team, using impressive speed to chase down Emmett Johnson. Hill also looked strong near the end of the 30-minute open session, keeping up with his colleagues during a cover drill that focused on out routes.
>> Speaking of punting, Montana transfer Brian Buschini put together some nice punts including some out of the very back of the end zone. His punts were regularly reaching between 40 and 50 yards.

Nebraska held its 12th practice of fall camp on Wednesday morning inside Memorial Stadium, and the first 35-or-so minutes were open for the media to watch.
Here are a few bits of information and observations from the offense side of things:
>> First things first, let’s start with the players who weren’t in pads and were not practicing. They included offensive linemen Turner Corcoran and Alex Conn, tight end Chris Hickman, who was wearing a medical boot on his left foot, and true freshman running back Ajay Allen. During my time watching the offense, I did not see receiver Trey Palmer anywhere.
>> Elsewhere on the injury front, tight end Thomas Fidone II was running stadium steps. He wasn’t wearing any braces or sleeves or anything on his legs. He looked fine during that workout, where he rotated between short, quick, choppy steps and longer strides as he went up.
>> After missing Saturday’s scrimmage with a minor injury, receiver Omar Manning was back on the field and didn’t seem hampered at all after.
>> One thing I found interesting was the triple-option plays the offense was running, which wasn't a part of Mark Whipple's Pittsburgh offense in 2021 but was in the Huskers' attack last year. The receivers would orbit motion into the backfield and be the pitch man in a triple option look.
>> Another play the offense was repping while I was watching was a jet-sweep run with the receivers. The offense would be in an under-center 12 personnel (one back, two tight ends) look, and have the slot receiver — I saw Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda and Alante Brown in this role — sprint across the formation just before the snap, take the handoff and turn up field.
>> With Corcoran out, the first-team offensive line included left tackle Teddy Prochazka, left guard Brant Banks, center Trent Hixson, right guard Broc Bando and right tackle Bryce Benhart.
>> The second-team offensive line included left tackle Kevin Williams Jr., walk-on Noah Stafursky (a former York Duke), center Ethan Piper, right guard Henry Lutovsky and right tackle Hunter Anthony.
>> No real change in the quarterback rotation — it was No. 1 Casey Thompson, No. 2 Chubba Purdy, No. 3 Logan Smothers and the others.
>> I noticed Oliver Martin and Garcia-Castaneda working with the first-team offense and catching passes from Thompson. Brody Belt and Rahmir Johnson was working in the slot at times, too.
>> One of the plays the offense was repping included a direct snap to the running backs, who would then burst through the A or B gaps. The Huskers did that last year as well.
>> During the punt returns I saw, Martin, Garcia-Castaneda and true freshman Emmett Johnson were all catching punts. Martin is a sure-handed guy back there and makes the catches look easy. That’s probably why Busch said Martin brings a security option back there.

***Chubba Purdy showed off his arm strength a bit during a standard warm-up throwing drill, as he zipped a ball to an NU manager so hard that it nearly went through his hands and hit him in the face. "My bad, dog."
Jesus this is reporting?
***Rahmir Johnson is listed as a running back but has been playing slot for the Huskers as well. He was training with the wide receivers on Wednesdays during some passing and route running drills.
Finding a way to get him in space.
