Official 2025 Nebraska Cardiac Beaver Slayers Baseball Thread (10-12) - We suck, time to talk about 2026

All the promise/potential coming into this season…… dam what a flop…..
blows my mind

next year we will potentially have:

SP: MM (?)
SP: Horn
SP: Jasa

+ quite a few relievers back

C: Jaske
1B: Sanderson
2B: Nunez
SS: Carey
3B: ?
OF: Brumbaugh
OF: Bolin
OF: Buettenbeck

Pitching staff might be decent. Not sure what to think about that lineup though.

We really need some help from the AD with scholarships and NIL so that we can go out and get some guys.

I'm assuming Jeter Worthley will push for playing time at catcher

Dang. Really hoped they might have something this year.

The offense is just lost out there
I think a couple things need to happen next year to work on the offense.
1. If @PonyBoy is right Bolt isn’t taking a big enough part in coaching the offense, he needs to get a bit more involved and adjust their approach. I know being the head coach you do have to delegate some but the regression in the offense is hard to ignore.
2. Need to get a one or two more solid hitters. I don’t think we really need a guy who’s going to hit 20 HRs (although that would be really nice) I just want a couple of guys who you know are good to drive RISP home. It doesn’t seem like we’ve had a tough time getting on base this season, it’s bringing them home that feels like it’s been our problem.

I will not waste my time this year watching us play conference games. I’ll watch midweek games to see who we should have hopes for on the mound. We are playing a lot of guys on offense. So we should have a good idea who to watch for there.

We are losing a lot off this team next year. But I’m not sure it really matters from a group that has been this bad at the plate.

Let me be clear just in case anyone misunderstands the above. Bolt is the head coach, and is responsible for the W' & L's.

His philosophy, much like those he learned under (DVH, Erstad, Childress), is for the assistants to handle their responsibilities.

Should he get involved, now, or even sooner? Yes, a case can be made but at the end of the day - he will have to live with with whatever decisions he made, as well as the results.

We are losing:

Helligso - C
Stone - 1b
Stokes - 3b
Overbeek - 3b
Silva - OF
Frost - OF
Swanson - OF
Brockett - SP
Walsh - SP
Christo - RP
Daiss - RP

Swanny and Stokes were great last year in the tourney
Walsh has had his moments for us as a pitcher and he's been good this year
Brockett threw a no hitter last year and was fantastic in the Big 10 title game against PSU

None of the other players have done anything of note

It doesn’t get worse offensively than it is right now. I’m caught between do I believe these guys are this bad? Or is it something within what we are teaching/coaching that has made them this way?

That’s the million dollar question.

Cael Frost was the Summit League Player of the Year last season, but now he's struggling at the plate, batting just .208. Was the pitching in the Summit League so weak that he's unable to hit now that he's facing Power 5 competition?

Right now we have two players hitting over .300, and that's Nunez and Bolin.

What happened to Stokes? And Sanderson? Why can't they hit anymore?

At this point in the season I don't see how you can point to anything other than coaching.

I’ll have to give you a firm “I don’t know.” If I could diagnose what was wrong and fix it I would be on staff.

What I don’t believe is that the coaches are teaching or doing things in the offseason that makes these guys worse hitters.

IIRC, 8 of his bombs were in game 1 of a series and a 9th bomb was against KSU in a midweek game. Impressive numbers.
