Monday was an emotional night for Garden City (Kan.) C.C. wide receiver
Demond Demas. The former high school five-star and Texas A&M wide receiver out of Houston has been through a lot in the last 18 months.
After being dismissed from the Aggie program in Mar. of 2022 for an assault charge, the 6-foot-3, 200-pound Demas landed at
Garden City Community College.
He first crossed paths with Nebraska’s coaching staff at a satellite camp in Houston this past June. On Monday,
Matt Rhule and several other coaches from NU officially offered Demas over the phone.
“I talked to all of them,” Demas said. “Coach Rhule,
Garret McGuire, and six or seven coaches. I’ve been in communication with Coach Rhule a lot. I also talked with
Evan Cooper.
“I’m just so thankful they made a move on me. Nobody before Nebraska would pull the trigger on me. I am very, very, very thankful for this opportunity.”
Demas’s legal situation is behind him
The significant change for Demas is the
assault charge he had while at Texas A&M is now behind him.
Once he completes his probation, his previous legal situation will be closed.
“Everything fell through in my case,” Demas said. “I don’t have any legal trouble. Once I finish my probation period, things will move forward.
“They have not found me guilty of anything, and I was given probation, and I am cooperating to the fullest extent.”
The now 22-year-old Demas has been in contact with Lousiville, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, and a few other schools, but nobody has stepped forward like Nebraska.
“This means a lot to me,” Demas said.
The next step for Demas is to visit Lincoln
The tone in Demas’s voice on Monday was like he already plans to be a Husker.
The only thing holding that back is a visit. He’s never stepped foot in Nebraska and hopes to get there soon. Demas has two years to play two and will enroll wherever he goes by January.
“Nebraska loses all of their veteran receivers for the most part,” Demas said. “They want me to come in and help change the program around with them. I’ve never been to Nebraska before and look forward to seeing it soon.”
Demas currently has 23 catches for 269 yards and one touchdown for Graden City. In 14 games at Texas A&M, Demas had 15 catches for 235 yards and a touchdown.
He’s learned a lot through his experiences, and he does his best now to groom younger players at Garden City C.C.
“The things I learned from the SEC, I pass on to the younger guys here,” Demas said. “I am trying to teach them the steps to become a successful receiver.”
