October recruiting thread

Checking in on a few Nebraska commits and targets following the bye week

Nebraska playing a little defense as teams are coming for its commits

It was a busy bye week for everyone as Nebraska coaches hit the road, Nebraska commits fielded visits at their schools and sometimes from programs that weren’t the Huskers.

Let’s look in at a handful of players and see what the latest is as recruiting heats up right at the same time that Nebraska’s attention turns to the second-half of its season – with a lot of these commits beginning to think about their own playoff games.

Callen Barta — The Topeka native picked up a Kansas State offer earlier on Monday and Husker247 can confirm that the defensive back from Seaman High School is planning to take a visit to Manhattan this weekend as the Wildcats take on TCU.

Barta is enjoying a strong senior season and again it seems the evaluation nose of Evan Cooper was on the money as the Wildcats have joined the party. This could be a unique situation where Kansas State pushes hard to keep Barta home. He’s part of a football family where his older brother Camden Barta plays for Emporia State.

It’s not known exactly how the Wildcats want to use Barta, but it does make sense to throw their name in and see if they can flip him.

Caleb Benning — Everything I’ve heard since October is nothing has changed. And with the Barta offer it doesn’t seem like Kansas State has moved in and flipped the situation for Benning either.

This recruitment was always going to play out at its own pace no matter the situation. That’s exactly where we’re finding ourselves right now as the Warriors look to finish off an undefeated regular season this Friday.

Grant Brix — Asked around in the network and will do more digging throughout the early part of the week, but it does sound to some that Oklahoma is in the driver’s seat. The Sooners are having a big year, but the draw has always been Bill Bedenbaugh. That relationship is close.

Nebraska came through last week. The Huskers have made Brix as much a priority as anyone can. The Huskers have proximity. Playing time. And a head coach that’s going to be here for awhile with a direction Brix himself has said he likes. But is that enough? Network sources don’t believe so for now. I’m still sitting on the fence.

Carlon Jones — Checked in with Robert Jones, Carlon’s high school coach at Bay City, and Nebraska assistant Terrance Knighton rolled through last week. Jones attended an A&M game earlier this year and that caught some attention, but he was there to support a friend in . However the Huskers, per coach Jones, have no reason to worry. Carlon reaffirmed his commitment to Knighton and Nebraska this past week.

There’s a chance Jones could enroll early and Nebraska is gently pushing in that direction, but it also seems more likely the defensive lineman will arrive in June. He’s having another great season. Full story on him this week.

Carter Nelson — The visit happened and Nelson remains intrigued by Notre Dame, but the Huskers and the pull of staying home is likely too much. The Irish made their pitch. They’ll continue to push for Nelson, but every source has indicated that the family still favors Nebraska.

Ainsworth went undefeated in the regular season and the Bulldogs are at home against Kenesaw to start the D-2 playoffs.

“Nebraska commit Carter Nelson remains 'steadfast' after Notre Dame visit”

“The trip came together quickly for Carter Nelson. By Saturday night, the Nebraska commit was on the Notre Dame Stadium sidelines taking in an historic college football rivalry.
Circumstances — not a change of heart — led to the unofficial visit weekend, Nelson’s father, Jake, told The World-Herald on Sunday night. The Irish had long been after the four-star Ainsworth tight end to attend a game but the younger Nelson wasn’t going to miss a Husker home contest to do so. With NU on a bye and Notre Dame hosting USC, the family saw a chance to make some new memories.
“I don’t think there’s anything to read into,” Jake Nelson said. “It’s father and son going on a trip to see an awesome game and taking a lifetime Notre Dame fan along with. It was one of those opportunities that you’d be a fool to pass up.”

The friend of the elder Nelson was “giddy” throughout the 48-20 Notre Dame win that included chats with the coaches. Former Irish luminaries — including Joe Montana, Tim Brown, Jerome Bettis and others — filed past them from their aisle seats near the field.

Notre Dame is one of a couple programs still actively recruiting the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Nelson even after the top-100 prospect with dozens of offers pledged to Nebraska in late June. Others are in contact as well. The family built many strong relationships during a process that began when Nelson turned heads with a 7-foot high jump in April 2022 — those don’t go away “just like that,” the elder Nelson said.

“(Notre Dame) told him, ‘You’re still somebody that we want. If anything ever changes, let us know,’” Jake Nelson said. “It was reiterating that. Them and some other schools have been trying to keep in contact with Carter. But he’s steadfast for Nebraska right now.”

NU coach Matt Rhule attended Ainsworth’s homecoming pep rally Friday — staying to take pictures and sign autographs — and watched some of the game too. The Bulldogs capped an 8-0 regular season that night and open the eight-man playoffs at home Thursday evening against Kenesaw.

Nelson has yet to miss a Nebraska home game and will be in Lincoln on Saturday for the Northwestern affair. He is the Huskers’ highest-rated prospect in their 2024 class.

Now he’s squeezed in a trip to another blueblood college program too.
“We had the opportunity to and we were like, ‘We just can’t pass this down,’” Jake Nelson said. “It’s an historic type of game and maybe the last opportunity to be able to do it. So we went ahead and did it.”

Sounds pretty N to me boys!

OL commits as of now… Tuamua and Davidson haven’t played a snap of football this year due to injury. Peters is 6’2 250 if lucky. Get to work Donny

This is why I think we need to move on from Raiola ASAP. Take the hit this year and risk losing some of these mid 3* guys and move on with somebody new or else next year when the inevitable happens and Raiola is let go that's another year wasted on the trail with kids who committed to and believe in a fired coach and we have to start from scratch in year 3.

I've honestly been waiting for a turn to JUCO at the WR position. (Maybe OL too)

We would get a player with a more mature body this way.
