Notre Dame is looking to make a big splash on the recruiting trail to close out its 2024 class and a huge target is currently on campus in South Bend to watch the Fighting Irish take on the USC Trojans.
Ainsworth (Neb.) high school four-star tight end
Carter Nelson, the No. 41 overall player in the country and No. 2 tight end in America, is currently visiting Notre Dame. He’ll be on campus all day long and in attendance for Saturday night’s rivalry matchup.
Nelson has essentially remained on our Top Targets list at Irish Illustrated since committing to Nebraska back on June 28. Not only did Nelson’s commitment to the Huskers surprise those inside the Gug at Notre Dame, but the timeline of his commitment was shocking to the Fighting Irish staff as well. Notre Dame felt they led following his June 9 official visit to campus, but Nebraska got him on campus a week later and he committed a few days after his trip to Lincoln. That said, Notre Dame, led by offensive coordinator and tight ends coach
Gerad Parker, never gave up and never stopped recruiting Nelson. We made it clear at Irish Illustrated that if Nelson didn’t want to be recruited by Notre Dame, all he had to say was essentially, “Thanks, but no thanks,” but dialogue continued because both sides wanted it to continue. In addition, director of recruiting
Chad Bowden was recently at Nelson’s game in Nebraska, which shows exactly where he’s at on Notre Dame’s board and how big of a priority he is for the Irish.
We’ll see what happens, but Notre Dame is fired up to have the 6-4, 205-pounder on campus, especially around Fighting Irish quarterback commit
CJ Carr and receiver commit
Cam Williams, two guys Nelson has remained close with throughout the process. Everyone at Notre Dame is thrilled to get on more shot at flipping Nelson and will be laying out the red carpet this weekend.

247Sports Scouting Report: Varied background that includes snaps on both sides of the ball as well as special teams in high school. High-flyer on the basketball court and also has rare results as a track sprinter, high-jumper and thrower for someone of his size. Frame can still support a lot of additional growth. Has a good catch radius and can make catches in traffic. Is by far the best athlete on the field on his film. Will have to adjust to the level of competition in college. Certainly has every needed athletic tool in the kit. Will have to settle into a position -- which is likely tight end -- get stronger and learn the nuances. Defense is not completely out of the question but he has big upside as a flex weapon on offense. Shows willingness and physicality as a blocker so playing on the ball especially after he adds weight is very possible. Big upside with the kind of profile that often ends up in the professional ranks.
