I don't read the Lacy de-commit as a relationship issue.
I don't either. And I didn't say that.

RE: the Lacy commitment, my point was that I don't think Barthel could have gotten that far on his own without McGuire helping. Barthel does not know the TX lay of the land. We did initially beat out Ole Miss for the Lacy recruit. McGuire was a huge part of getting that commitment.

That's not a knock on Barthel - he's just not a TX guy. I don't see him waltzing into the Metroplex and stealing a Dallas recruit from an SEC school. He needed McGuire's help to close the deal. Again, not a knock.

All of this is moot anyway bc Lacy decommitted. I was using that as an example of how difficult it is to win in these ultra competitive battlegrounds (like the Metroplex) when you're not an expert in the area. McGuire is, Barthel is not - which is why they teamed up on that one.

Barthel can develop these 'in's in different recruiting areas, it just takes time. Hell, Chip Kelly became the master of FL/Miami recruiting and he had no ties there (he's from New Hampshire). He just spent an ass load of time there.

We kind of run an overlapping responsibility model: i.e., most of the recruiters have their position and a geography. Barthel will always need help on some targets because you are, in most years, trying to get just one guy and start with a smaller pool than most positions. You can't have relationships everywhere. You get the small pool defined 12-18 months before signing date, use your geographical associate to start things off and then work with those targets to build a relationship individually. It seems like it is, in the end, an interpersonal relationship skill thing.

I mean, we did the same. We brought in the OT from Bishop.

If OU could, I have no doubt they would take both.
Not really. Ours was not an OV, and we did not extend an offer yet. With ours, it seems pretty clear we are waiting to have the Brix visit before we consider offering.

Seaton is scheduling an OV, which means he is a definite take. As he should be - he is a 5 star. They could always cancel the OV if Brix commits, but who believes they actually would? Much more likely Seaton would cancel that than OU. And he already has an OU offer and has already UV'd OU

I don’t know it’s necessarily a hot take, but I am more dubious on Barthel compared to other assistants like those on the Defensive staff. If we are only going to (inexplicably) only take one RB/year, as seems to be the current MO, Barthel’s recruiting leaves a bit to be desired. We scrambled last year to get an unranked Ives (despite multiple UConn RB’s in the portal), and we are scrambling this year for a plan B after the Lacy de-commit. Feels very Verduzco-ish with our QB recruiting under Frost.

Barthel also ran off AJ Allen and is known to be a bit of a hard-ass, which is fine, but you’d then expect our RB’s to play more disciplined. He got dealt a tough hand with injuries this year, but he’s also been questionable at managing the RB rotation at key times and has not yet solved some of the fumble problems his backs have had this year.

All in all, I am hopeful he will develop, but I’m cautiously watching to see. He has unquestionably developed E. Johnson so that is a definitive positive.

1-2 RB a year is not inexplicable. Most teams only allocate 4-5 scholarships of the 85 to RBs because in this day/age usually only one is one the field at a time. 85 scholarships, 22 positions plus a couple of specialists suggest about 4 schollies top a position. e.g., (22*4) plus2 = 90

I think 2 RB/yr (even if done every other year) would be great - I was saying only 1/yr was inexplicable in context of our stated identity as a “run with the RB” team. RB’s get hurt a ton, and we currently don’t have the depth necessary when running it 60% of the time. Further, if we are only going to take 1 RB each year, why is Barthel scrambling so much when you only have to bring in one player each year?

We don't have any RBs in the class. He is looking for one.

Yes, the question is why didn’t there seem to be a back up plan already in place? How many ‘24 RB recruits did we bring in for visits since Lacy committed months ago? You can’t honestly say we’re in a great position in RB recruiting and it’s perfectly fine to question that when you only have to bring in one per year.

Because we told Lacy we'd only take one - that's partially how we got him to commit. It's hard to recruit a back-up plan when you have to say you're full. And it's hard to tell Lacy you're taking one and continue to bring in more.

I'm not saying we're in a great spot. Probably should not have made promises to Lacy even if he wouldn't have committed in the first place. But that wouldn't have been Barthel's call, it would be Rhule's.

Fair enough - just seems like a dangerous way to live with a pretty important position in this offense. Anyway, thanks for the convo! Hope we can bring in a skilled RB this year and another one from JC/portal
