It'd be very interesting to see where this team would be if fat Matty A was never here. Maybe it's a fluke but this year seems to be pretty telling. As it turns out, Hoiberg did not completely forget how to coach.

I can tell you with 100% certainty we would be in a completely different place had Fred not given MA carte blanche control over the roster from day 1. This year is basically year 1...and I'm not saying that in defense of Fred, I'm saying it because this is the first "coachable" roster he has had. Ultimately it is on him because of the amount of control he gave Matty, but the program, the lockerroom, the culture is night and day different now.

Did Matt have a similar level of control at ISU? Or what changed to make their combo tank so badly at NU when it had worked so well at ISU?

Saying no chance in sports, especially college basketball isn’t wise. An effort like last night, Purdue, and Pickle Smoochers is going to win you some big ten games. So I’ll say 18 isn’t likely. But I’m not going to say no chance.

Turd certainly has other priorities besides basketball at the moment. 100% agree there. I think Fred is making Turd’s year on the job a whole lot easier but choosing not to suck at the moment. I also think Turd is much more willing to hit the reset button on basketball than he was football.

Turd will reset Fred b/c he IS a professional AND has no baggage like Frost did. Fred made the moves and it's proving to be amazingly brilliant. #GOBIGFRED

Not sure about the amount of control at ISU but whatever happened wasn't a good thing. Maybe promising players (recruits) playing time and recruiting a bunch of pot smokers wasn't a good thing after all. I think Fred knew what Matt was doing but trusted him too much to delivery the kinds of guys he did at St Johns and ISU. The guys he was getting were good individual players but no way in hell were they team players. Walker and Banton may be the exceptions.

I don’t know about baggage. But what I’ll say is from Fred’s experience at all levels including his time in NBA front offices and coaching likely means that his tough talks with Turd were much more productive than Frost’s were.

My guess is what changed was Fred's heart condition and the amount of time he wanted to devote to being on the road recruiting. And Matty A. got lazy...or maybe he got Long Covid and couldn't go anywhere...
