Game Thread Nebrasketball Game #16: @ Purdue: Sunday, January 12 - 11:00am BTN

Not sure if this played into it and could explain the poor energy, but I’m sure a 12 EST tipoff didn’t help and sleeping at a shitty hotel.

Lastly, too bad we can’t find someone who can shoot like Keisei for us. Maybe Fred needs to get skinny white kid with a punchable face that can hit 3s consistently.

I get it. Many of our other sports sleep at equal to or shittier places, with 11am game times and our expectations are way higher. And, we spend way less on those sports while flying commercial on top of it. Sometimes, you're dealt a bad hand & gotta perform.

Essegin is at 40.7% this season.

Tominaga was at 37.6%, 40% & 33% in his 3 seasons at NU (most recent first).

I admit KT could create his own and was more of an overall offensive threat by the time he left but IMO, Essegian is a damn good pure shooter.

Just wish Essegian and Williams could get clicking quicker. The rest of the team can hit the 3, just inconsistent. Some of our players need to work on their mobility instead of being like trees lol.

@Carm do you have a link to expenses by sport for NU? Secondly, how it stacks up with other schools?

Or anyone else. I had it, but can't find the damn thing now.

Hopefully Fred is already on it

Teams typically shoot a higher percentage from 3 at home. Our defense is catered to give up open 3's. Changing the pregame routine isn't going to change that. They'd need to basically change the defense, which we are not equipped to do with this personnel. Juwan (and sometimes Sam despite his height) are the only ones that can get down a defend someone one on one.

Purdue shot 57.6% setting a Husker opponnet record with made 3's, Ioa shot 48.6% - sorry, I don't buy the "they're the home team and shooting is better at home" philosophy. Those numbers are extremely high.

We were late to help defense. We weren't strong with our hedges on high picks. We weren't closing quick enough on skips. We struggled on switches. We continued to double a 6'10" non-offensive threat while we have a 7'2" defender previously known for some rim protection.

For 40 minutes, we didn't adjust once. No 1-3-1 (we had a length advantage too), no high trap, no single post defense to stay on shooters. Not a single time did we adjust.

To write this off as "we only have 1 defense to run" is not only absurd, it's unacceptable. Yes, teams shoot better at home. Not at the rate they did, with ease.

If we were being honest, Purdue was aggressive on defense and were in our pockets all day long while we were a step back on defense. Our bball defense is almost as bad as our football secondary defense at times with the amount of space we give defenders.

We always double the post and have for every single game regardless of the other team's personnel.

We rank 358th out of 364 teams in Opponent 3 Point Attempts per Game. This is not anything new. We rely on the other team missing open 3's.

Purdue is ranked 6th in the country in 3 Point percentage. We let one of the best shooting teams in college basketball have a bunch of open looks. If we're not going to change our defensive scheme then that's how it's going to go.

Not always, especially against non-offensive threats in the post. But you're furthering my point; we're a 1-trick pony on defense.

Correct, and it works at home OR against poor shooting teams. On the road, we have to be willing to switch things up. 1 possession, 5 possessions, whatever it takes as it happens all the time in college hoops when a team is struggling to stop someone.

Purdue v B1G at home
34.6% v Maryland (9-26)
40% v Northwestern (8-20)
57.6% v Nebraska (19-33)

Purdue made more 3's against us than they did the previous 2 games combined. *Puke*

They're 11th nationally in 3pt%, after our game. So it makes even less sense to run the same defense, on the road, without throwing some wrenches at them.

Curiously turned on the Purdue/Washington game and Purdue looks like a completely different team.

They are 1-7 on 3 and only have 33 points with 15 minutes left. Against NU, they were 19-33 from 3. Unreal how hot they were.

Washington is ranked 27th in opponent 3 point attempts per game. We are ranked 358th. That would be why.
