Nebrasketball Coaching Hot Board

Let’s say Fred’s season turns out terribly and loses control of the team. Here are some names I’ve kept an eye on since the beginning of the season that would be reasonable:

1. Darian Devries - Drake. 2 time Missouri Valley Coach of the Year. 5th year at Drake. First 4 years each had 20 win seasons. Before Drake was an assistant at the blue school in Nebraska for 17 years totaling 20 years on the staff. Maybe Altman could put in a good word in his ear for us.

2. Grant McCassland - North Texas. 114-68 at North Texas over the last 6 years. Was an assistant at Baylor before going to Arkansas St and then North Texas. Baylor assistants turn out good - look at Tang at Kstate. Won the programs first NCAA tourney game in 2021 - wouldn’t that be nice. (Took job to Texas Tech)

3. Steve Lutz - Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Has been an assistant at Purdoodoo and Pickle Smoochers. Took a 5-19 team and turned them into 23-12 with transfers. (Took job at Western Kentucky)

4. Craig Smith - Utah. Long time Miles assistant. Has had some pretty successful teams at South Dakota, Utah State and now Utah. Turned an average SD team into NIT teams. Led Utah St to 3 consecutive tourney appearances. As of 1/4, he has Utah at 11-4. Would be great as he knows the landscape of Nebraska.

Gotta disagree on that one. Spoke with some successful Power5 coaches who coached against us while Miles was running the program and they were far from impressed with his coaching once Asst Craig Smith left. They did not feel Miles was a Power5 level coach or recruiter. If he hadn't gotten lucky with a couple unproven transfers (Petteway & Palmer) we would have been in big trouble offensively. They did think we played solid defense but our offense was dependent on us having a "Chucker who got hot" if we wanted to win a game against anybody decent. They also felt Nebraska had one of the biggest home court advantages out of anywhere they played.

True. But he did get us to the NCAA tournament and Nebrasketball has been a shit show since. I thought Fred would've been better, but it seems like all that he was according to the rumor mill just a mannequin and let his assistants run wild with the program. Let's face it, Nebraska is nothing more than a women's sports school anymore.

I do not think Fred will be fired after this year. He will get next year as well. Unless Fred wants out and renegotiates his buyout, I think he is safe.

Hell, Turd gave Frost the start of year 5 and Fred is only halfway thru year 4. Basketball is low on the list of Turd's worries at the moment.

Her crazy, drunk ass in the stands yelling at every home game is just what an AD would need. Greg is a great coach but after the shit came out to public knowledge after he got debunked will keep him from getting a decent job. I'm a Shockers fan as I used to go to games in the mid 80's with my parents (grew up only 40 miles from Wichita).

Greg was known as one of the biggest most hated assholes in college basketball. Heard many coaches talk about how they couldn't stand that arrogant prick. Haven't we already been abused enough with arrogant prick coaches with Pelini & Frost? It's not the Nebraska Way not to be nice. If Miles was half as good of a coach as he was at being nice and winning the press conferences we'd have loved if he would have won enough to stay.

Would absolutely love Grant McCasland. Amazing defensive coach that would fit well in the B1G.

If you want to go the other direction, offensive guy, Jared Grasso of Bryant would be another good one.

Devries and Dana Ford would be great out of the mvc.

Sneaky pick: Ben McCollum at Northwest Missouri St. 4 D2 nattys in the last 6 years. He’s a Cockeye guy though.

I think McCasland gets grabbed by a team this off season. Can’t see him staying at North Texas much longer
