A short report from San Francisco. I'm up here for a few days to see my Vietnam buddy and I haven't been back since before the pandemic. A lot of changes and not for the better.
I've been coming here since 1968 and I have a pretty good perspective on the city. It was declining before due to the homelessness and crime but it's at another level now. The homeless are everywhere, literal lee every block even in the Financial District where I stay. I saw a dozen or so crashed out on the steps of the Pacific Stock Exchange aka western Wall Street. Union Square looks like a scene from a dystopian movie. Most are just zonked out zombies but there are some who are aggressive and will follow you begging for money or cigarettes. Historically, the worst areas were in the Tenderloin District which has been Skid Row for decades. Now some other areas are nearly as bad.
There are no tourists. Chinatown and North Beach (Little Italy) are deserted where in the past it would be shoulder to shoulder. So many restaurants gone and those that are left have rules you'd expect to see in a Level 4 bio lab. Most of the locals just get food to go.
San Francisco has had some of the lowest national Covid 19 numbers for the entire pandemic yet everyone is masked. Whether in their cars alone, walking on the street, riding bikes, they wear them everywhere. They lose it when they see unmasked people and will confront you. I don't know how much is virtue signaling or if they are legit terrified. Probably some of both but it's incredibly annoying. They don't want to hear about being vaccinated because you must still wear a mask as a safeguard against the unvaccinated. Pure insanity.
A once beautiful and unique city is circling the drain. It was always a bit quirky and weird but it was pretty harmless and fun to visit. Now, when I return home to Orange County I feel like I'm going back to West Berlin after having been in the Communist Sector. It's that bad.

I always look forward to @Woodrow F Call pictures. A veritable Norman Rockwell in capturing midwestern daily life. Gets me right in the homesick feels.

Wife always gave me shit that I never let her cut my hair or trim my beard. I said this is your once in a lifetime opportunity because we cant go anywhere or do jackshit. I like to pretend this what you, @LoudHogRider or @Elizabeth Reed may have looked like in your primes.

The closest I’ve ever come is on our past Canada fishing trips the rule always was “no shaving” for the week. Turns out I’ve got gray hair on my chin.....who knew? ✊

The sideburns are simply glorious. It’s like you’ve channeled Englebert Humperdink and dropped him in the Flint Hills of Kansas, but hair? Those are rookie numbers, son!

Trust me - people look at you different when you're rocking a pony tail.
