Mickey Joseph

So, if he's actually coming as WR & RC, then what of the rest of the staff? What does Beckton do? Just TEs? We're short a position...or not hiring a ST Coord.

Sadly the most logical way to make room for a STC would be to jettison Dawson and move Chin to DC/OLB. I’d be bummed by that though since I think Dawson is a really good coach.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Dawson move to an analyst role or something like that. Chin already coaches the hybrid LB position and our OLBs play more like DEs at this point anyway.

Dawson has an automatic $50k raise coming 1/1/2022. I have a hard time believing he'd be moving to an analyst role

Or Tuoiti moves on

Dawson doesn't bring much to the table recruiting-wise. He's done OK with the OLBs, but I feel like we should be getting better results for what he is paid.

I think he's done a good job. I think that group as a whole are working well together and have done a nice job turning the defense around.
Has the defense really turned around though? We were pretty good at the "bend but don't break", which kept scores low - but we were in no way disruptive in the backfield, couldn't rush the passer, and almost never forced mistakes/turnovers.

On top of that, we gave up pretty significant yardage which allowed teams to flip the field on us regularly, putting our crappy offense in a terrible position.

The defense has improved every year. I can't blame them that Nebraska can't punt the ball.
They improved, but it would be nearly impossible not to, considering how experienced the defensive side of the ball was. Even with that experience, our OLBs were kinda just meh. Not bad, but they didn't make many plays either.

JoJo Domann was kind of just meh? I thought Caleb Tannor and Garret Nelson were much improved. He doesn't get credit for that? Really?

The best thing the OLBs have done is made significant strides in their assignments, which has resulted in them just making more tackles and less pressure being put on the back end of the defense to make plays in space. Tannor, Nelson, and Jojo were all so much better this year in that regard.

The defense was solid, but it definitely needs to improve in pass rush, takeaways, and 3rd down conversions. My big question with Dawson is whether he can go out and find legit guys on the edge to help improve all of that

Doesn't the OC usually get to weigh in on the offensive position coaches? Wonder if we already have the OC penciled in.

I wasn't counting Domann since he was more of a Nickel/Hybrid and I was under the impression that Chins did most of the work with that spot. CT and GN looked better than last year, but that's not a hard bar to clear.

IMO giving TEs + WRs to Beckton and hiring a special teams coordinator probably makes sense. But if we're talking about bringing Mickey Joseph as a WR coach, that throws a wrench into things. Which makes me wonder if Frost might make him RB coach or something instead.
