One other odd thing about Titan's last minute decision to take a USC OV over Nebraska's - they have 5 DL commits already, including 3 of the top 18 in the On 3 Industry rankings

Nebraska Gains Traction with 3-Star DL JJ Finch After Late Offer; Eyeing Mid-Week Visit to Lincoln

2026 DL JJ Finch

Nebraska recently extended an offer to three-star defensive lineman JJ Finch from Indianapolis (Ind.) Warren Central. The 6-foot-3 and 260-pound Finch isn’t allowing the timing of the Huskers’ offer to prevent him from taking a closer look. In fact, Finch is in the process of setting up an official visit to Nebraska later in June.

“I am going to have to get over there and see what they’re all about,” Finch said. “My visit to Nebraska will be a mid-week visit. I don’t have it set up yet.”

Finch is a dominating force at defensive tackle. The Huskers see him playing the three-technique for them in their defense. However, he says he has the confidence to be able to move up and down the line/

“Nebraska sees me primarily as a three-technique,” Finch said. “I think that I could play all the way out to a three-technique and could play in an odd-front at a four or inside four.”

Finch has taken recent unofficial visits to Alabama, Florida, and Michigan this spring. He has three official visits set up at the moment to Alabama on May 30, LSU on June 6, and Alabama on June 13.

Nebraska is light on defensive line targets and their board took a tough blow when Titan Davis eliminated Nebraska and cut his list down to four schools. The Huskers are still in the picture to host four-star defensive lineman Valdin Sone.

Finch is rated three-stars by the On3 Industry Rankings. He is ranked as the No. 444 recruit, the No. 48 defensive lineman in the country, and the No. 3 player in Indiana for 2026.

note from Carm - the 3 OVs he has set up are LSU, Alabama, and Tennessee

Titan Davis: this is what I think happened.

Especially Michigan, and also Alabama, recruited him hard and pulled him away. We don't have room for a lot of DL, what we really need most, looking at the roster, is a big traditional DT like Sone (a physical freak) and I assume we are willing to give a "high draft pick" freshman revenue share to probably no more than one DT and he is the guy. I hope we get him.

Perhaps this may have played a factor in Davis' decision?

We are now looking for a 3 technique replacement for Davis and offered Finch 5/13. He is more likely to command a "normal" freshman recruit revenue share.

We already have a number of guys on the roster that appear to be similar in type to Davis, which affects what we are willing to commit to one this year.

He’s a top recruit and in a key area and region for NU. They just got beat and that’s that.

I think you do have to think of it in the context managing something similar to a salary cap. Otherwise, you will attribute results of differences in resource allocation to inadequate recruiting.

If you listen to Tim's video above it sounds like NU is just out and he moved on to other schools, Alabama and Michigan are the leaders. Tim sounds concerned about the DL class at the moment we'll have to wait and see what Bradden can do after coming in late. Maybe they can get back into it if they can string together some more wins. I see him as a high level recruit at a key position that you make room for.

Unfortunately it's that point in the cycle where the rubber meets the road. Guys that they thought they had a chance with move on and others pop up. Looks a little concerning at the moment for DL and TE? as guys come off the board but we'll have to wait and see how the coaches react and move the board around.

Room in the DL room itself likely isn't the major issue. It (IMO at least; haven't listened to Tim) is more likely what the pros would call a "cap space" issue.

E.g., Malcolm Simpson is a similar-sized guy we look in the 2025 class, and he is very likely making top 6-7 in the class money. We only have one Big Guy (320-ish) on the roster, RVP.

I think the change is more because we added the GM March 11, not that we changed position coaches. His job is to allocate money to address needs.

In short, he won't come back even if we win this year. We won't be able to make him a competitive offer because of the way we are allocating resources. I think that the analytical framework we apply to understand recruiting from the past is out the window. But I would not claim my view is better than any of your views.

I see what you are saying. I might be 100% wrong but it looks like they have already moved on to the way things are going to be than the way things are currently this cycle with teams blowing money left and right and having to be responsible for that for the next four or five years.
