As we inch closer to June it felt appropriate to highlight several targets that it feels like the Huskers have made big gains with and could be close to landing.
Nebraska has just eight commitments as we inch toward June, but things are likely going to change fast, and if last year was any indication with
Matt Rhule and staff then it could come in a flurry.
Here's a few that particularly stand out to me:
Dawson Merritt — There's a tendency to assume
Alabama is the favorite for the Blue Valley High School linebacker, but that might be a mistake. The Merritt family is very smitten by Nebraska and the way the staff rallied together to pull off a short notice visit weekend at the end of April earned great respect as well.
The connection to Rhule that the Merritt family has is a strong one and the trust has been earned, so there's not a question of what to expect, as they feel they already know.
Kalen DeBoer and Alabama don't have that luxury. And frankly that's a leg up for the Huskers. Throw in the work
Tony White and Robb Dvoracek are doing and Nebraska should at least make things difficult.
Still it's Alabama and there's a visit scheduled. But what if Merritt decides to end things before then? Stranger things have happened.
Jamarion Parker — Another Midwest recruit the Huskers seem to be in a good spot with, the running back from Cardinal Ritter College Prep is set for a visit to Nebraska at the end of June. That could be the difference maker for the Huskers, who had a chance to have Parker on campus during the spring practice period in April.
One reason to feel good about Parker is there's not a lot of movement involving other teams and there's also not a lot of movement involving Nebraska with other running backs. That can sometimes indicate that things are lining up nicely for both sides. And if that commitment does happen, it'd be a good win for the Huskers at a position they've struggled to attract high-level talent and for Parker there's a chance to be an early contributor for an offense that could be even more explosive by the time he's college eligible.
Quick Hitters
—
Cortez Mills is still a big target for Nebraska.
Garret MCGuire is putting in the work for the Huskers there and he's getting an assist from TJ Lateef, who named Mills as someone he's focused on for peer recruiting.
Miami still looks tough to beat though.
— Christian Jones is cycling through options and Nebraska remains the most likely landing place as visits are getting set. The linebacker has attention from schools well outside the area though and this could be a longer than usual in-state recruitment.
— Another name I continue to waffle about just making a Crystal Ball prediction for is
Houston Kaahaaina-Torres. The Hawaiian offensive lineman has been pretty much all-in on the Huskers for a long time and is an expected visitor at the end of June. It wouldn't be an upset if the recruitment ended then too.
— Camp season is coming. Prepare for a wave of visitors looking to land offers and for a staff that won't be afraid to bet on their in-person evaluation skills and, of course, athletic testing scores.
