Matt Rhule reportedly declines Nebraska job

this is so stupid. A smokeshow that makes you look like you failed? Geez.

If you had #2ndChoice wrapped last month there's no need for a smoke show. You just keep your mouth shut.

That goes for anyone other guy you argue was wrapped a month ago

I'm glad someone else is thinking what I'm thinking. There's no reason for smokescreens if you have someone wrapped up. Or is there?

Explain this to me like I have no idea.

If we were there and that was his worry, I think we could have found a way to ensure that he wouldn’t find himself worse off in any situation. 40m is a lot of money. But the difference between what his FMV and what Carolina would pay him is likely small enough that it shouldn’t have been an obstacle to us getting our top choice.

The more I think about this, the less sense it makes.

Either we’ve signed Rhule and he’s the guy, or he left us at the alter after he led us on for over a month.
If we ensure he gets his money (say, indemnify), we're paying $10M in FMV comp and Carolina is off the hook

What it comes down to is that Rhule wanted us, we wanted Rhule but not to the tune of $10M guaranteed a year

Yeah, I'm not sure how Rhule's contract was worded with Carolina as well. I'd think a dispute like fair market value could be settled in court, but going through the litigation process would take much longer than the necessity of Nebraska needing a coach very soon ..
nobody is going to do this deal with court in mind. That would be crazy

If they said FMV was 10M, that might mean that, practically speaking, we had to pay rule 10M a year for him to take the job. If we weren't willing
to do that, it would at least cause a temporary impasse if not kill the deal altogether.

What gives Carolina the power to determine what his FMV is?

Further, Matt Rhule’s annual salary with Carolina was 8.89m. If you adjust that to the cost of living in Lincoln you arrive at 8.4m.

If we weren’t willing to pay 8.4 for a head coach I really don’t know what to say.

That’s why this is a done deal already.

What if the smoke screens aren’t from the athletic department?

What if coaches who previously interviewed a few weeks ago are using this time to leak smoke to get raises? Agents are smart and can play this both ways.

My understanding is that under these NFL contracts they contractually have a right to make a determination and then pay the buyout according to their determination. Obviously, you can challenge that after the fact, but that takes a long time. Lots of guys sue NFL teams over buyouts, as you have probably seen. NFL teams wanted to end the practice of the new employer and the discharged employee colluding to screw them. Giving the NFL team first shot at deciding makes it much harder for people to do that because then, if they try, they have no idea what they'll eventually make except for the new salary. The discharged employee is incented to get full FMV for his services.

I think we tried, along with Rhule, to get an agreement from the Panthers in advance, but they wouldn't agree unless we in effect assumed the buyout.

Do you know how Rhules's salary was paid by year? I have also seen it was $846K/month. His contract isn't public.

If it was a done deal there would have been a pc already. I know some people say Turd is going to wait until the the end of the season, but you would have announced Rhule and let him get to work filling a staff and recruiting.

If he’s your top guy, go get him. Carolina initially paid him 7 years 62m. Match that and move on if he’s the guy you want. That’s 8.85m over that time. That makes him the 9th highest paid head coach.

This is 100% how I've come to view the situation. Nobody truly knows anything, but everyone is speculating. And the media has to pay the bills, so they have to speculate and put content out there.

That being said, we were presented with what I believe was the most substantial, real leak and evidence in the search so far - virtually no one denies that Rhule was on campus anymore from my understanding. So that's what I'm sticking with. It's Rhule. People expected an announcement when Rhule was here. Since there wasn't one, they are speculating that something happened.

Didn’t we even have players following who we thought could be assistants on Twitter?

I have no trust in Urban as an intermediary/consultant for Turd after the role he played with Addazio at Colorado State - that one didn't work out to well for the Rams
So you wouldn't take Fickel because he came with Urban's blessing?

We aren't talking about Addazio here.
