At the end of day we all know you don't like the staff. Tony White was your buddy and we see how that turned out for his new school. You're very condescending and act like you're the smartest person in the room. You talk a lot about what you know but if you know so much more than us spill it!
Wait a minute... me saying "Luckily I'm not out on them" in regards to this staff got a response from you where you start it with "At the end of the day we all know you don't like the staff"

You may need to take a seat on this one.

I’ve seen enough hot garbage preseason media fluff pieces here that I take the whole “he almost won the starting job” stuff with a huge grain of salt. Reality is he didn’t win it against a guy a year younger. If I had to bet, he’ll win the job, but I’d be dumbfounded if we guaranteed him anything.

I think you might be getting @ShortSideOption confused with someone else

Nice check yes, no fucking shot that he got a guarantee he's starting. Dude didn't even play for Notre Dame. How would our staff come to that conclusion? This ain't Spindler coming after starting games.

I'll just tell you that I was told in November the staff needs to figure out if they are going to bring someone in to compete with Lateef for the starting job and match his paycheck to keep him here, or decide if they were going to guarantee the starting job and lose Lateef. Lateef is still here. That is not "my opinion".
I believe you and I definitely think the staff has to walk a tight rope in this situation. I'm just looking at it from Minchey's perspective. He needs to play ASAP. He's been in college 3 yrs - the clock is ticking.

If I'm him, I'm taking less $$ to walk in and start at an Cockeye St/KSU level program. He can't afford to uproot his life just to end up sitting the bench again. Even if you're getting $200k more. If he sits the bench at NU he's gonna have to hit the portal again in JAN 2027. He's already burned his RS yr.

That's why I think he's been told he's got a very good chance of starting. It's too risky if not IMHO. I'd rather start at ISU than sit the bench at Nebraska for more $$$.

I'm with you on that. I think Minchey is looking at what he saw (and apparently everyone that has voted on this poll lol) and likes his chances.

I'll take out what I've been told and try to say things a different way. First, do we think our staff guaranteed a starting spot to someone with zero college starts and only 29 pass attempts after 3 seasons? How furious would you be if that's the case? Furthermore, do people think we went to Lateef and said "I know you started 4 games for us and won one, but you just aren't ready yet, so we are going to bring in someone to start while you develop more" and that person ends up being the guy that has never started a game and has 29 pass attempts. Lateef is ok with it and still here? Not a shot.

Now... do I think the staff offered Minchey thinking he's who we need to be our starter in 2026 and is better than Lateef? Probably. But I just don't think there's any way Matt Rhule guaranteed the starting spot to a guy that has never started, especially with what happened with Jeff Sims who actually started.

Fair point!

I do think at a highly scrutinized program like ND the truth comes out though. My guess is it's probably accurate to how it went down. Remember ND fans started saying this as soon as Minchey hit the portal (when he was attached to no one). I think Rhule has the ability to research it and find out for himself.

I'll put it this way, how many of our backup QBs would our fans speak so highly about? I can't think of many. If we lost our backup over the years I think our fans would mostly tell the new school: "be careful, he really sucks." 60% of our fans think Lateef sucks.

I don't think it's a given that every school's fans would just pump their own guy up for no reason. Our fans wouldn't do that.

I think we're arguing over semantics here.

You're taking the guarantee thing very literally. No one is saying that it was a literal guarantee. It's a bit of a straw man for you to keep bringing it up.

I'm going off of a guess on how the agent-school conversations go. I believe they are full on Ari Gold vs Head of Paramount/Sony/MGM negotiations. That's essentially what happened with Dylan Raiola. It's what happened with Kyle McCord - they kept negotiating w different schools until they got the package and assurances they wanted. It happened with Dowdell last year.

I don't know why it wouldn't go on even with a lower level guy like Minchey. He's probably gotten offers to be a starter somewhere. He's probably gotten offers to be a depth piece too. If I were him, I wouldn't consider coming to a place like Nebraska unless I was told exactly what I wanted to hear. It just feels naive to me that with this amount of money involved there wouldn't be a wink & a nod from Rhule about what his chances actually are.

Maybe he's going for way cheaper than I'm expecting. If he's cheap then yes I can see it's a "you have to beat out Lateef & you might fail" thing. That's the speech I'd give Chiles. I'm placing Minchey higher than Chiles. Chiles looks like Sims 2.0 to me.

People don't want to hear this but Lateef's true freshman passer rating was higher than Dylan's when he was a true freshman...

Per sports-reference.com
Lateef is better than Raiola IMO. You have to remember Lateef is only a freshman and got tossed to the dogs. I think Lateef will be just fine. I was sold when he said he was fine with competition. Good kid with a head on his shoulders not just looking for a paycheck like Dylan.

I'm genuinely shocked the amount of people that are already saying Minchey will be the starter next year when he only has 26 pass attempts in mop-up duty when they were up 50 at Notre Dame. So I'm curious where people are landing on this.

Few different choices. The first is who thinks Lateef will win the open competition. But the 2nd and 3rd option is me trying to figure out if people have seen enough out of Minchey to think he's better than Lateef, or if they think Minchey is starting because Lateef isn't good enough?
Unless there's a third option we're screwed if TJ is starting next year

He might be by the time he's a senior but he is NOT better than Dylan right now, not even in the same league

FYI checked out some ND media from preseason. I think the battle really was that close FWIW. From some of these videos it looks like Minchey was kind of the forgotten guy going into the spring. Some had him as the #3.

Minchey was at a disadvantage bc CJ Carr was a blue chip recruit that ND really put out all the stops to get. And that guy is going to get the benefit of the doubt vs the older RS who has already been a reserve in the program.

It sounds like Kenny really battled his ass off and legit could have won that battle in a fair fight (not that it was unfair - just saying that the tie goes to the blue chip QB recruit). But it sounds like Minchey's mobility almost made him a better fit for the offense that the ND OC runs.

Interesting to see these videos & read their fan comments. I'm definitely a fan of this kid. Especially after watching his game tape as well.

No @HerbRedman , no way Nebraska could be in for a quality qb. We are terrible. I don't need these facts fucking the narrative that we are done. Can't have it. Nope, not doing it. Have you approved this with @ShortSideOption?
