I’m surprised Alabama didn’t back channel this and have someone locked down already. They certainly knew about this for a while.
Agreed, it’s not a good sign for a seemless transition for Alabama that they’re striking out on #1.

Especially with Auburn cooking in the offseason right now. If Auburn becomes a hotter name than Alabama in-state - they’re in trouble.

I don't see why Sark would leave Austin. Texas is potentially a way better job than Bama. Better school, better resources, more money, better city in a hugely populous football crazy state. Texas actually looks like an even better job in an SEC without Saban at Alabama.

On paper it looks that way.

But Texas has won 1 national title in the last 50 years, 'Bama has won 10, while the items from your list have been largely true that whole time. Something's not translating.

Job security at Oregon much better than Alabama with their crazy expectations. Any season that's a notch below the Standard season at Alabama that Saban had and people are going to be calling for his head.

they've had Bryant and Saban. They made excellent hires.

Bama in the years between Bryant and Saban -

Texas also had 2 CFB HOF coaches during that span. Here's their record between Fred Akers & Mack Brown:

Obviously Bryant & Saban are tremendous coaches & great hires. Texas has also had the pick of the litter in nearly every coaching search, & brought in multiple guys who won at a very high level at other places, & couldn't replicate it at Texas. IMO, UT is just one of those places where the grass is not as green as it appears from the outside.

Akers isn't even in the same universe as Bryant and Saban, and Akers isn't in the HOF.

Darrel Royal is, though; he won 3 NCs at Texas in the 1960s. And Mack Brown won at NC at Texas is 2005.

The 2001-9 span of Brown's time at Texas was pretty elite

Lanning seemed like the obvious choice to go after, and now that he turned them down, not sure who the best option would be.

Final AP Poll
1. Michigan (61) - Harbaugh may leave, but would be for the NFL.
2. Washington - Deboer seems like a solid coach and would probably do well, but only has 2 years of leading a P5 and both with Penix. Will be interesting to see how well he will do when Penix is gone.
3. Texas - not sure why Sark would leave Texas for Bama, especially with what he has built so far and the resources he has.
4. Georgia - no reason for Kirby to leave Georgia.
5. Alabama ----
6. Oregon - Lanning said no.
6. Florida State - Norvell was on the hot seat just a few years ago, but would probably jump at the opportunity.
8. Missouri - Drink was also on the hot seat just last year.
9. Ole Miss - Lane is an interesting one who would most likely take the job, but not sure Bama would want him. He also has a roster (with his portal haul) that could easily get in the playoff next year, just not sure what their ceiling really is.
10. Ohio State - OSU would probably be happy if he took the Bama job.
11. Arizona - don't see it.
12. LSU - highly doubt Bama would go after Kelly.
13. Penn State - would laugh if Franklin got the job, as he can't beat OSU or Michigan.
14. Notre Dame - Freeman would be a potential option, but probably not at the very top of the list.
15. Oklahoma - don't see it.
16. Oklahoma State - no chance.
17. Tennessee - would be hilarious to have Bama take one of their rival's coach.
18. Kansas State - not happening.
19. Louisville - not happening.
20. Clemson - Dabo has fallen quite sharply when he was for a long time considered the heir to Bama.
21. North Carolina State - not happening.
22. SMU - not happening.
23. Kansas - not happening.
24. Cockeye - LOL please!
25. Liberty - not happening.

There will obviously be some NFL coaches (both former and current HCs, as well as coordinators) who will get tossed out, Urban will get some run, but there really doesn't seem to be any definite choice with Lanning off the board. Seems like they would swing at Sark, Lane, or Deboer, or look toward the NFL?

Not many NFL guys right now who have college experience (like Saban did when Bama hired him).

If I were them I would go all in on Lane

Thanks for slapping this together. I immediately said that this is such an interesting hire to make. Obviously most everyone would want it just because of the prestige of the job, but Bama won't want everyone that does want it. Like others have said - prior to Saban, Bama was a dumpster fire for the most part. How good is the job really? Also, does anyone remember the coach after Bear Bryant? No. It's impossible to come in and take over for a legend.

Looking through it like this really puts it into perspective - my short list was Kirby (no chance, right?), Sark, Lane, and Lanning. Lane looks like the most viable option.

Wonder how much of a hand Saban will have in naming the successor? Schumann or Rees if you want a big time young guy, which seems to be a more and more viable trend. It also appears more and more likely when you really go through the options. What a weird opening...
