The recruitment of four-star 2024 defensive end/linebacker
Jacob Smith
has come down to a two-way battle, Smith tells Inside Nebraska:
Michigan vs. Nebraska.
The Wolverines dealt the Huskers recruiting losses in the competition for linebacker Hayden Moore (a former Nebraska commit) and offensive lineman Amir Herring in the 2023 cycle – in addition to Michigan pulling standout freshman linebacker Ernest Hausmann from the Huskers via the transfer portal.
Michigan – which already has Jacob's brother,
Jerod Smith
, committed in the 2024 class – is lined up to net another recruiting win over Nebraska in the form of Smith. But the Huskers were able to put up their latest fight to land the 6-foot-4, 226-pound defensive prospect from Cheshire Academy in Connecticut as he took an official visit to Lincoln over the weekend – his third trip to see the Huskers.
This visit was different for Smith because it was the first time in which he truly got to dive into the most critical questions for the Husker program and get his best gauge of what his future would be like at Nebraska.
“This time I really got to ask them important questions," Smith told Inside Nebraska. "The coaches and stuff definitely gave me the same type of vibes as the other two visits – it was a very welcoming type of vibe. But this time I really got to hang out with the players, experience it, ask the questions that needed to be asked.
“I was just asking the players about their coaches’ coaching styles, what’s the biggest change that they’ve seen, what are things they like about the change, I was asking about school, campus in general – just questions that need to be answered so that I have a better picture on Nebraska as a whole.”
Hosted by freshman defensive end/linebacker
Princewill Umanmielen, Smith got the best view of what it's like to be a player in
this Husker program that he's gotten to know over the course of three visits – and got the most vital information he was seeking.
“I was vibing with everybody, and everyone was saying the same thing about how they’re all bought into it and bought into the process that they’re going through right now," Smith said. "They all want this change to happen, and everyone is 100 percent on (board) and going for it.
“The number one question I was asking was what’s the biggest change with the new coaching staff. The main answer was they actually care now. And them caring makes the team care and now everyone’s caring and when everyone’s bought in, that’s when success comes.”
The Husker coaching staff, meanwhile, dove into its vision for Smith in the new-look defense.
That effort was spearheaded by linebackers coach
Rob Dvoracek, who showed Smith film of
Jimari Butler,
Chief Borders and some other Husker linebackers from the spring game – plus some film of Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons – to give him a detailed view of how he would be a fit and how they would use him.
“I was talking with Coach Rob, and (he sees me as) a linebacker in general," Smith said. "He said with my skillset right now, I could play with the linebacker group. He sees me being able to be diverse and play all the linebacker roles and line up in a lot of different spots – but mainly the two outside spots (Jack and Will).
“Coach Rob said I have good athleticism compared to other high schoolers, I have good mobility, can bend well, play in space. They like me as a person, too, and that I have a good personality – and I like to think I do, too.”
That pitch differs from the one being given by the Wolverines, who see Smith as an EDGE player and standup defensive end in their scheme.
It's a more clear-cut role at Michigan than the one being pitched by the Husker staff. But now, after getting more details on his official visit this weekend, Smith will need to decide which role suits him the best.
A smart betting man would pick Michigan, which already hosted Smith for an official visit during the first weekend of June and will host him again this coming weekend for an unofficial visit as both Jacob and Jerod will head to Ann Arbor.
Either way, the winner and loser in this recruitment will be squaring off on the field Sept. 30 when Nebraska hosts Michigan at Memorial Stadium.
“I’ve only gone on two OVs, and those are the two (schools) I’m looking at right now," Smith said. "My decision is coming kind of whenever I feel like it, whenever it’s the right time. I might not publicly announce, but I will silently commit eventually before the season. That’ll just be whenever I feel it’s the right time.”
