June recruiting thread.... let's get it, dudes.

I disagree, Logan. People keep saying this but I keep not seeing it. Sounds good. Seems like it could be true, but........🙄🙄🙄.

My favorite when this comes up is "He understands leverage because he was a wrestler".
Benhart was an excellent wrestler in HS. We've all seen how that's translated into success on the football field lmao

Parker Thune and Greg Smith of Rivals discuss 3 players who have OVs to Nebraska over the next two weeks, Grant Brix and Isaiah McMorris, June 23, and Kaedin Massey (June 12). Not good predictions as far as Nebraska is concerned. Sounds like we're behind OU for all 3 in the view of these two.

2. Oklahoma will land three players from the Midwest in the 2024 cycle.

Thune: FACT. Oklahoma has the inside track to score a trio of Midwestern studs in three-star OL Grant Brix (Cockeye), three-star ATH Michael Boganowski (Kansas) and four-star edge Jayshawn Ross (Missouri). Moreover, if the Sooners start pushing again for Nebraskan wideout Isaiah McMorris, they’ll be tough to deny in that race. And of course, Williams Nwaneri is perhaps the most high-profile Midwest recruit that Oklahoma is pursuing. Throw in three-star Kansan OL Kaedin Massey, who takes an official to Oklahoma next weekend, and the Sooners should easily be able to bat .500 with their 2024 targets in the Midwest.

Smith: FACT. It’s surprising that Oklahoma doesn’t already have a Midwest native on the commitment list already. The team signed four in the 2023 class and two in the 2022 cycle so three is a good number here. There is a lot of focus (rightfully so) on the Sooners' pursuit of the Midwest’s best player,
Williams Nwaneri. He’s critical to the Sooners pushing up the national rankings list. But barring something weird happening they should close the deal with Brix, Boganowski and Ross. McMorris and Massey could easily end up in Norman if they have spots in the class.

This crystal ball is puzzling to me simply because Benning says in his interviews that he won't commit until after HS football season. We would really agree to hold a spot in as small class for him until then? He is tentatively coming for an OV now on 6/23. Why have him come so soon if his decision comes much later? Wouldn't ewe want him to OV closer to the decision date so its impact is fresh?

This just seems wierd.

Get in arguments with wrestling guys all the time. Would rather my o linemen played basketball and threw shot/disc
Benhart & Nutsmasher were both State Heavyweight Champions, who have yet to use those talents to excel on the field. I would think Wrestlers would learn quite a bit about leverage but like you said basketball and Track & Field also help out. Sports like Basketball, Hockey, Lacrosse & Soccer are great for footwork. I understand why Rhule appreciates multi-sport recruits.

What shocks me when it comes to sports was watching some of these Major League Pitchers bat. My god how could they not know how to swing a bat properly. I grew up pitching but also played Short Stop & 3rd base so could swing a bat. Growing up did they just pitch exclusively? Some of them look like swinging a bat is foreign to them.

Maybe coaches told him "Shit or Get off the Pot". I like Benning but he is not at the talent level where you hold a spot for him til after the season. By now he should know if he wants to be a Husker or not. If so pull the trigger or we are bringing in a bunch of taller faster DB's from Texas to take that scholarship ASAP.

The didn't tell him to commit or lose a spot. In both his interviews (247 & Rivals) he said he was now coming the last weekend of June for an OV but hadn't changed his mind about his post-season decision date.

Crazy

It's really odd as he is coming off a significant injury. I'm sure he is still communicating with colleges, but no one else asked him to OV.

What does he gain by this strategy? I don't get what advantage this gives him in anything. I'm willing to have someone explain it to me and open my eyes.

More importantly, why would we agree to it? - unless he isn't guaranteed a spot right now, just an official visit, and we need to see him play his senior season

this has the feel of the kind of offer where the school wants to see certain things during the season before you can commit (WARNING - I can read too much into things 😉

from the 247 story on Benning

“We spent about an hour and a half together talking and learning about each other,” Benning said. “We went over film and it was an extremely interesting and cool day, learning so much with him one-on-one and the type of coach and guy he is.”

Benning has talked with Cooper before, but the time on Friday gave him a window into the coach, his philosophy and why the recruit feels like there’s a connection worth exploring.

“I think because he’s such a black and white guy,” Benning said. “It’s either right or wrong. Nothing in between. I can appreciate that because there’s no false sense of security and guessing you have to do. It’s very clear. He also explained to me how he celebrates the little things. The small technical details of doing your job correctly over something like a big splash play. I like that a lot.”

from the Rivals Benning story - "strong mutual interest"

According to Benning, one of the top uncommitted recruits in the state, the goal of the visit was to figure out where both side stood in his recruitment. He "He just felt like I wasn't reaching out as much and showing that I want Nebraska, so we talked about where Nebraska lines up in terms of my recruitment," Benning said. "I explained to him I don't want to go somewhere where I'm not wanted, so it kind of went both ways. I want to be wanted and he wanted to be wanted."
Benning spent the entire visit with Cooper, a one-on-one session that included plenty of film review. Benning, who has visited Cockeye three times and watched film with Hawkeye defensive coordinator Phil Parker during all of them, gave Cooper high praise.
"I would definitely put it up there with hanging out with coach Parker watching film, because the stuff he (Cooper) taught is actually stuff that, as soon as I'm healthy, I'm going to work on because I saw the difference it can make when it's good and bad, and the stuff I need to work on," said Benning, who is recovering from surgery to correct a broken collarbone he suffered in the third game of his junior season last fall.
"It got to the point where I was asking questions about it, and I was blurting out answers," Benning added. "It was really good."
According to Benning, both parties came out of the visit on the same page and with a better understanding. Benning is planning to set up an official visit at the end of this month.
"Nebraska obviously checks all the boxes," Benning said. "The people there, the fan support, being close to home, coach Rhule — check, check, check. They just have to win some games."
Benning said he wants to make a decision on his future program at the end of his high school season.
How has the relationship between Benning and Nebraska changed after the meeting?
"They had shown I'm a priority, but after today I feel like there's very strong mutual interest," Benning said.

This guy was the big surprise of Camp today. He was a 2023 grad of Charlotte Christian HS who, in March, decided to go to Avon Old Farms for post-grad (which makes him a 2024 if he does it). I don't think going to prep school is grade related; he has offers this year from the Air Force Academy, West Point, Dartmouth, Brown and, two days ago, Duke. He has blown up on the camp circuit in the last 3.5 weeks.

N.C. linebacker Derrick Brown Jr. is one to watch

One of the unexpected standouts of the camp was 2024 Charlotte (N.C.) Avon Old Farms linebacker Derrick Brown Jr.
A late addition to Nebraska’s camp roster, Brown had the full attention of NU’s staff.
That included several one-on-one conversations with Rhule and an extended personal workout with defensive coordinator Tony White.
Listed at 6-4, 220, Brown was hard to miss with his frame and athleticism. His father, Derrick Brown Sr., told HuskerOnline that running backs coach E.J. Barthel was the Huskers’ primary recruiter.
Brown Jr. holds numerous G5 and Ivy League offers and recently picked one up from Duke. Other P5 programs like Penn State, Virginia, and Buttgers are all showing interest.
He chose to attend Nebraska’s event over other Buttgers and Penn State camp invites. While Brown arrived in Lincoln without an NU offer, there’s a good chance one might be coming soon.

– The man pictured, Derrick Brown Jr., a 2024 linebacker originally from Charlotte and now at Avon Old Farms in Connecticut, was impossible to miss. He worked out all over the place. Listed at close to 6-2, 212 pounds, he has put up times around 4.6 or slightly better in the 40, with a broad jump of 9-8.

He certainly had the full attention of onlooking Husker staffers as the three-sport athlete exhibited his burst. He announced his reclassification to the 2024 class in March as a post-grad athlete at Old Farms.

I'd circle him among the attendees today and see what comes of it.
