@tman87 what position did you play? Scholly or walk on? @tman87
WR/Wingback. Originally walked on, then earned a scholly. Lettered 3 years (which wasn't as tough to do back then). Was a great experience, something I worked towards and dreamed about growing up as a kid in NE Nebraska. I think most of us know how much Husker football meant to Nebraska kids back then. Had a couple other D1 scholly offers, many smaller schools offered. Told my dad it was Huskers or nothing though. Would have I followed through that had I not gotten asked to walk on? Dunno. Maybe. Or maybe I would have been a Jayhawk, lol (no thanks).

Luckily I showed out real good at a Husker summer football camp up in Norfolk some of the assistant coaches put on between my Junior and Senior year of high school. 40 time, backpedal time, pro agility time all were near the top of their camp records, so that really helped bring some attention to me (my backpedal time they told me was the best they had recorded at a camp up to that point). I also showed I could play. It was that camp that really got me an offer, plus a really good senior year of high school ball.

I also grad assisted for a season after my 5 years playing were up. They made us put on many hats - helped a lot in recruiting, basically guys like me were the ones making all the calls to high school coaches all around the country looking for talent. Back then, every high school coach was eager to talk to a "recruiter" or coach from NU. Also coached on the field with receivers, specifically trying to help several younger receivers find their groove. Sadly, Riley Washington was one kid I had put under my wing, but try as I might, he just never put in what it took to utilize his talent. The kid had great talent.

My biggest regret is not staying on as a grad assistant. They had asked me to, I unwisely declined. Was burned out from football was my excuse/reasoning. Stupid decision, as at that time, having any NU coaching experience was a golden ticket if I had wanted to stay in the game coaching, or even stick around the Husker program for a while. But that's water under the bridge, I chose a different path.

Good stuff. Appreciate the few nuggs.

We have gotten extremely soft - just not up to snuff physically. Seems like the work ethic isn't what it used to be, judging by the state of too many of our players physical condition. I think we have made progress in this area, though. It seems to me we have fewer stick armed, beer belly lineman than we did in the past 5 or so years. Overall the conditioning of the team looks to be improving.

Besides not being physically dominant, I think the will to win is not nearly what it used to be. Just the entire football program - seems like they haven't had that desire to just win. Easy for me to say many years after I played, when we were the dominant physical program in the country, but winning was everything and it didn't have to be talked about, it just was that way. The players and program has gotten used to losing, too used to it. Again, easy for me to say having been away from the program (moved away from Lincoln 20 years ago this year), but that's what my eyes tell me.

Coaching wise with Frost so far - man, I have been disappointed in how sloppy we are. We are almost the polar opposite of a T.O. team. Mistakes galore, penalties, terrible special teams - it is extremely hard to watch how we have played as a team these last 5+ years. I honestly can't believe T.O. wouldn't be on the horn or meeting with Frost and staff about this, at least to talk about it. It has to be driving him crazy to be so bad at these extremely important concepts and part of the game.

I am also not very impressed with the coaching staff in regards to scheme and adjustments. Seems like we do fine the first few series often, but after the scripted plays are done, we start to struggle. Also don't think we have a consistent game plan. And I dislike trying to play up tempo, primarily because we are so undisciplined, there is no way we can play up tempo when we are already sloppy as fuck. Martinez also is far too slow getting in to the next play, and we all know he isn't seeing things well enough to make reads in plays a lot, well you can also see he struggles to get the play called and team lined up to have any kind of successful up tempo strategy. Slow it down and give these guys a chance to get comfortable executing the plays that the coaches send in. Rushing is only magnifying the issue, IMO.

We don't seem to develop players well, either. Just hasn't been happening for these last 5 years or so. Development of talent, and utilizing that talent, is what separates coaches.

Defensively, I have long said I am not a fan of the 3-4 defense. I don't think it fits us well personally. I would prefer a 4-3 scheme with plenty of nickel. Get some big safeties up at OLB or nickel and let the 4 guys with hands on the ground bring the heat on the QB. Honestly, a lot like Mcbride had us doing in the 90's. But that isn't what Chinander wants to do, at least not as our base. I realize we are often not in our base 3-4 anyway, but I just am not fond of the 3-4 in general. Our defense should be better this year though, and we have a really good D Line and some super seniors back, so I think this years D should be improved. We will see.
Based on what you've seen so far, would you say that based on the "continuity" concept, if you were making decisions, would you continue to ride with Frost past this year? Let's say he goes 8-4 and shows some improvement. Or are you out on Frost or extremely skeptical at this point? I guess what I'm asking is are you giving him his full contract to let it play itself out given what we know right now?

- Solich's womanizing and maybe getting his side piece pregnant
- Carl Pelini using the private jets to bang boosters daughters
- DB Coach Sanders getting busted with an underage prostitute on a school paid trip to Vegas
- Bohl knocking up one of the Student Managers
- Johnny Rogers getting off after being arrested for robbing a Gas Station
- RIchie Incognito fight with I think it was Grant Mulkey
I would like to know more about #1 - Solich's womanizing and maybe getting his side piece pregnant. I live in Florida, but I have heard various versions of this story. One version is he dated a woman from David City, NE during his years as head coach at UNL, which is adultry, but at least the woman was not a student and he did not reportedly get her pregnant. Another version is he got a co-ed Nebraska student pregnant. Three, the womanizing is the biggest reason why he got let go by Steve Pedersen in 2003. Four, Frank Solich had alcohol issues (higher functioning alcoholic?) at UNL, which ultimately led to the DUI in Ohio Univ. What is the truth? And is #2 true? If so, what happened to Frank Solich's bastard child? And why did Frank's wife stay with him and put up with this behavior? And why did UNL not help him seek alcohol rehab therapy?

Also, tell me more about Carl Pelini and Craig Bohl? I never knew anything about Craig Bohl's off-the-field issues. From what I knew about Carl Pelini from the message boards is: Carl loved going to the bars. He slept with a boosters's daughter-in-law and former Miss Nebraska from Omaha Burke and that caused a divorce for both their marriages. Carl lived with Bo Pelini and his wife initially during his divorce. The former Miss Nebraska dated Carl for several years after the incident, while Carl was in Boca Raton, FL coaching at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). I guess the reports of Carl Pelini caught using cocaine at FAU are consistent with his drug habits at UNL. And why are we not helping our coaches with substance abuse issues? Frank's alcoholism and Carl's cocaine abuse should have been nipped in the bud at UNL rather than kicking the can down the road to another school to fix?

When I was at UNL, the two big things I personally saw or had second hand info on were Kevin Ramaekers's steroid rage issues and Scott Baldwin's mental health decline. When I was a freshman, I went to a UNL baseball team party off campus. One of Nebraska baseball players was really drunk and started talking s*** to Kevin Ramaekers. The next thing I knew it the UNL baseball players nose was broken and his nose was literally turned sideways by Ramaekers's punch. Kevin had like no neck and was a muscle bound specimen at that time, so I figured his behavior was more or less 'roid rage.' And I made sure to be super friendly to Kevin or else that might happen to me. Regarding Scott Baldwin, when I was a junior, I lived off campus near 27th Street and Vine Street and during late winter Turd Alberts and some other football players including Scott Baldwin were in a car around my neighborhood. I think they were going to a party or something. Anyway, Scott Baldwin freaked out and left the car by foot. I believe Turd Alberts almost got into a fight with Scott Baldwin because Scott's behavior was so wild and irrational. We all know what happened to Scott Baldwin over the next 2-3 years after that initial incident when he got shot and paralyzed in Omaha, but I wondered whether Scott had severe traumatic brain injury from football because the longer his career went at UNL, the worse his mental health deteriorated. I mean Scott Baldwin's mental issues were a lot like the Boston College players with TBI, who committed suicide despite everyone trying to help him.

I think Frost gets at least the next two seasons regardless. Unless this season is a 1 or 2 win season. If we have another poor record this season, I could see him being pressured to get a few different assistant coaches, and while that might help, it would also probably be too little, too late.

I personally need to see definite improvement from Frost and the coaching staff. But especially Frost. 8 and 4 would be great TBH, I would be thrilled with that kind of improvement. This is a make or break year for him. If he can get at least 7 wins, with definite improvement in coaching (in all areas), we see a consistent scheme and shore up the areas where we have been woefully undisciplined, then I will feel more confident he and the staff have figured some things out and made strides in becoming a better staff. As of now, we have not seen much, if any, improvement in his first 3 years. Yes, there have been challenges no one expected, but I don't think those challenges are enough of an excuse for the level of some of the failings this team has had with Frost as HC.

I want him to be successful. Not because of who he is, his status as a legacy Husker, etc, but because I don't want to have to go through another round of "find the right coach". If we end up that route, we will have to basically just get lucky to find the right guy. Another reboot is something I don't want to think about yet. So for me, he gets this year and next year, but if both years show little to no improvements, and it's basically same old stuff we have been seeing, and our record stays in the shitter, then it will definitely be time to move on.

After 2022 you’ll likely have your consensus one way or the other and you’ll only be eating 3 years of a buyout if you’ve got to make a change. I know many will say that money isn’t an option at Nebraska, but in a year where we had a 60 million short fall and just paid another 3 million to tell our AD to fuck off, it does start to matter in this scenario.

I, like you, hate the idea of constant rebuild and would rather not think about it.

Can tell you that this one is 100% false.

Heard from a second hand source that they were pretty open to bending the rules on the recruiting trail… paying recruits through backdoor channels, etc
You would think there has to be some good John Blake stories.

How can you know this is 100% false? Couldn't he have knocked up a Student Manager? Maybe she had an abortion? Intrigued how you know this is 100% false. Are you related to him?
