Can't say I knew of any "scandals", but certainly some minor juicy nugs.
My freshman year, Tyrone Hughes came into team meetings at fall camp (the entire team met in one large amphitheater room before each practice to go over film before splitting off into position groups meetings) with a wine cooler. Probably 7am in the morning, maybe even 6 am as it was fall camp, drinking a wine cooler. T.O. found out about it (I think T.O is the one who actually noticed it, I was right there as Tyrone was sitting right next to me), asked him about it, Tyrone played dumb and said he got it out of the pop machine in the locker room, LMAO. The rest of the receivers were like, you gotta be fucking kidding me. Nothing happened to Tyrone, lol. Just a "don't do it again" talk. Lotta guys would have gotten their walking papers if they had done that, but not Tyrone. He was talented, but lazy.
It was pretty well known some of the players partied hard when we went to bowls. I didn't see it as it was before my time there, but in the 80's supposedly quite a few of them would get back to their room at 4 or later in the morning. Cocaine was the drug of choice for them was the word.
I saw Raemakers and a couple other guys choke each other out in the locker room. Purposefully letting another guy get behind them and choking them with their arm until they passed out. Also saw these same guys doing "chocolate beers" off each others ass cracks once in the locker room. WTF man, lol.
Saw a few JUCO guys with envelopes with a grand or so in their locker when practice was over. Apparently a booster was paying these bigger name JUCO guys like this. Didn't see anyone else get money. Tyrone Hughes had a very nice, new sports car with purportedly a 10K stereo system in it. He used to drive around under the stadium showing off and banging music until T.O. told him to knock it off. Really doubt Tyrone had the funds for that car or stereo setup.... T.O. knew that one of the local car dealers probably gave him the ride somehow.
Johnny Mitchell rarely to never went to class. He was in one of my classes and about halfway through the year (he had never been to that class up to that point), right as class started and we were going to take a test, he sits right next to me and says "hey bro, give me the answers as soon as you get them". He actually stood up and was copying my answers with no care in the world, the teacher never did anything. Had another class, this one a very large one, where on the last day of class, finals day, about 8 players (all starters) came in and had all the answers typed out in their hands to every quiz and test for the entire class. They literally took all the quizzes and tests that day. I asked one of them afterwards and he said one of the female "tutors" for the team gave them all the answers. Teacher had to know what was going on, nothing ever was said or happened.
Johnny Mitchell - I have quite a few stories about him honestly. I knew him pretty well as he was my next door neighbor in the dorms. It was clear the coaches wanted me to be a good example for him. LOL, with that guy no one could get him to do anything. One time he had a bunch of cash he was showing, said he already had an agent. Someone called bullshit, Johnny said "fine, I'll call him and put him on speaker phone". He called, and sure enough a guy that certainly sounded like an agent was talking. Johnny also missed a lot of practice - a lot. His last year there, he was mad because he didn't think they were throwing to him enough. He had skipped several practices in a row, and the coaches were getting worried. I will never forget when he came walking in the last half of practice, we were running 11 on 11 drills. I was actually standing right next to T.O., Johnny came up and told him "I'm quitting if you don't throw me the rock at least 10 times a game". Many of us heard this. Not a surprise, but that was his last year on the team.
