Nebraska added another piece of immediate help in its secondary on Tuesday, as Garden City (Kan.) transfer
Javier Morton announced his commitment to the Big Red.
Morton, who was initially committed to Alabama out of Stephenson (Ga.), has three seasons of eligibility remaining in Lincoln and will be on campus this week with classes starting on Tuesday.
The 6-foot-2, 197-pound Morton told Husker247 that he began hearing from Nebraska defensive backs coach Travis Fisher a few weeks ago. That interest led to an official visit to Lincoln this past weekend, and a quick commitment.
Morton said that Fisher’s straight-forward approach helped him feel like Nebraska was the right fit.
“Coach Fisher,” Morton said of what helped him decide on Nebraska. “The DB coach. I just liked him. It’s one thing where you go up there and like it, because as a kid, you just see all the good stuff, but my mom really liked him. We’ve dealt with a lot of colleges before and I’ve been recruited by a lot of schools and was committed to Alabama, but my mom and dad really felt comfortable with leaving me in coach’s hands.
In nine games last season, Morton made 20 tackles, one sack and defended two passes. Morton said he knew fellow Georgia natives Myles Farmer and Quinton Newsome, and that he’s confident he can be successful in Lincoln.
“They just want me to be that change,” Morton said of what he can bring to the field. “I’m coming in there as a boundary corner and want to do special teams. I want to do kick returns and punt returns. I just really want to be part of the change. I know I can succeed at Nebraska and come out of there and get drafted high.”
As a high school recruit, Morton was a three-star prospect according to 247Sports with an overall rating of 88. He held offers from more than 20 programs, including Arkansas, Auburn, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska and others.
