If you were NU AD would you move on from Hoiberg?

Should NU AD move on from Hoiberg?

  • NO - Fred deserves to be back in '25-26

  • YES - Fred's had 6 yrs at NU & I'm ready for a new HC

  • MEH - We suck at MBB, just retain FH & keep NIL $$ flowing to football

His record here is crazy, for some reason I thought he had one other season where he finished decent in conference (besides last year where we made the tourney). HIs first two years were disgusting. Started to show some progress year 3-5, but then completely faltered end of this year to make people forget that.

He needs to probably finish top half of the league next year to be back. He's had 6 years and only one finish better than 11th, he's had ample time.

I think you can explain away those first 3 years with excuses/explanations like "COVID" and "FH re-assimilating to CBB" and "FH had to learn NIL era" etc....

I think it looks explainable after last season where we did well and made the NCAA tourney. It looks completely different after you miss out on the friggin B1G tourney completely in yr 6. And I think it gets really hard to explain if you put up another clunker in yr 7.

I'm still Team Fred... but he can't afford to be finishing in bottom 16-18 of the B1G. If he's gonna do again in 25-26 then you might as well try someone else IMHO.

1 & 3 are the same choice as far as I am concerned. There is no reason to keep him unless the school only cares about the football program.

He has done nothing to support a conclusion he deserves to be back.

They won't fire him.
They are both "retain"....but I was attempting to separate the confidence votes from the 'actually he sucks but Nebrasketball' votes.

I think Hoiberg would have been fired by now from probably 95% of P4 schools. I'm not sure how many P4 programs bring a guy with a conference winning percentage of 0.311 back for a 7th year.

Is his buyout truly 18M? If so, then I don't see how you can afford that, particularly with the Memorial renovations, rev-share on deck.

It would be nice to see if he would take a cut in his salary and have it flow to NIL and/or rev-share.
Dannen needs to leverage this end of season disaster into reducing the buyout. Maybe then we can afford to can him. There's nfw we can fire him right now.

Two different questions.

1) the thread title. If you were NU AD would you move on from Hoiberg?

Yes, I have zero confidence that he will have a competitive team next season or any season in the future. Why retain a coach that you think is going to fail again.

2) the poll question. Should NU AD move on from Hoiberg?

That's a bit trickier. If he has the funds to do it, then yes, but if not then no. Next seasons budget is going to be interesting, with revenue sharing. With the stadium project and other expenditures, I wouldn't blow a bunch of money buying out Hoiberg, unless some folks have stepped up to help pay for it. So it depends on the buyout and how much boosters are willing to step up to can Hoiberg.

I think he probably sticks around another year, we will have a crappy year and we will fire him after next season. Doesn't really get me fired up for next basketball season.

Truly is amazing it's even being discussed with a .311 conference winning percentage. But it's not like it's truly gotten better.

Take out the first year, I never hold the first year against a coach, then it's .354, still awful.

But then Matt A was suppose to be the bad egg, so don't count the first 2 years, .400, still pretty bad.

Maybe just count the last 3, that's when folks say that Hoiberg figured out his formula to win in the B1G, .467, still a losing conference record.

Even the last two seasons he's 2 games under .500 at .475.

Which isn't really surprising when he's had a losing conference record 5 out of 6 seasons.

Then again we were on the edge of making the NCAA tournament, probably 2 games short in back to back years.

I think the bottom line is Hoiberg just isn't doing a good job and it really isn't that hard for a power conference team to make the NCAA tournament. They take the top 40-45 teams, you don't really have to be that good to be a top 45 team.

I’m pretty sure I’m one of the few on this board that has repeatedly said we should move on and people constantly think it’s crazy. It blows my mind that we pack PBA on a regular basis and after 6 years most fans think this is what we deserve. We are turning into to Cockeye with Fran. I get the program has never been good but if we don’t want to try to improve than just get rid of it.

perversely, he'd have to pay Nebraska $10M to leave for another job if he took it this month. Drops to $7.5M after this month.

I'd tell him - "if you can find another job

1. we waive your buyout to us
2. we will waive the mitigation duty you have if you take a job after we fire you so 100% of your new salary is yours
3. we will settle the $18M max (pre-mitigation) we would pay in normal pay through the end of the 2028-29 season with a lump-sum payment of $10M when you leave. I.e., if he makes more than $8M in that time frame he comes out ahead.

Coming up with $10M will still be a chore.

I thought we should have fired him and got Pitino when he was on the market. How can you say we are turning into Cockeye with Fran though? He has a better program than us.

I think the yr 7 is deciding year.

Fred's actually at the point in the movie Step Brothers when they're interviewing for a job with Seth Rogen. He thinks something is off with them but assumes they're being quirky on purpose. Then John C Reilly let's out like a 1-min fart and Rogen goes "now the tuxedos seem kinda fucked up."

Hoiberg's yr 7 is either gonna be a "oh so you had this master plan all along?" or it fails miserably and he's gonna be the tuxedo at a job interview guy "now your 31% winning percentage seems kinda fucked up."
