UCLAbia Promototed within for their DC

UCLAbia football coach Chip Kelly didn’t take too long to find his new defensive coordinator. In the aftermath of D’Anton Lynn’s move to USC, the Bruins head coach has reportedly named Ikaika Malloe to take on the role permanently.

“UCLAbia promotes Ikaika Malloe to defensive coordinator. He has coached the Bruins defensive line and outside linebackers. Former co-DC at Washington as recently as 2021,” Adam Rittenberg of ESPN reported on Wednesday.

“Ikaika has a track record of developing NFL talent on the field and outstanding young men off it,” Chip Kelly said in a statement, via UCLAbia’s website. “I am excited to watch this next step for him and our team.”

Malloe carries 20 years of coaching experience and has served on the UCLAbia sidelines for the last couple of seasons. He mentored the Bruins’ outside linebackers in 2021 before expanding to the defensive line the following year.

Malloe served as UCLAbia football’s defensive coordinator for their L.A. Bowl win over Boise State on December 16th.

It makes sense for UCLAbia to promote an internal candidate like Malloe. The Bruins haven’t established continuity with its defensive program. Succeeding D’Anton Lynn, the late Bill McGovern, and Jerry Azzinaro, Malloe is UCLAbia’s fourth defensive coordinator in as many years.

UCLAbia football ranked as one of the top defenses in the nation in 2023. They finished second in rushing defense (80.8 yards per game), third in team tackles for loss (8.1 tackles for loss per game), fifth in sacks (3.31 per game) and 10th in total defense (301.5 yards per game). The Bruins also topped those categories in the Pac-12.

New OU Defensive Coordinator Hired.

The Oklahoma Sooners were without a defensive coordinator for just a few hours before an exciting replacement emerged.

On Thursday, head coach Brent Venables announced that Ted Roof had left the program by mutual agreement. Many DC changes around the country were expected. That wasn't one of them. Now it's clear that a new DC was already in the crosshairs when that move was made.

Matt Zenitz of 247Sports reported that Jacksonville State's Zac Alley is expected to be hired to replace Roof.

Who is new Oklahoma Sooners defensive coordinator Zac Alley?

Alley got started in coaching early as a student assistant as a freshman at Clemson in 2011. Dabo Swinney kept him on as a graduate assistant in 2015 and he remained with the Tigers, working under Venables until he landed a role as the inside linebackers coach at Boise State in 2019. From there he took over as Louisiana-Monroe's defensive coordinator in 2021 and then jumped to Jacksonville State in the same role in 2022.

Despite being in their first season in FBC, the Gamecocks were highly competitive in Conference USA, winning nine games. Fielding a stout defense was a big part of that success as Alley's unit held opponents to 21.2 points per game.

Alley came highly recommended by Venables when he started rising up the coaching ranks. So it's no surprise the Oklahoma head coach is now willing to bring him in to run his defense in Norman.

The Sooners gave up 23.5 points per game in 2023 but the average wasn't the issue. Giving up 38 points to Kansas and Arizona in two losses and 45 to TCU in a shootout victory was the problem. So was allowing 5.41 yards per play, ranking 54th nationally.

Alley is only 29 years old. Roof has a coaching résumé longer than that. So Venables is taking a risk hiring someone so young. However, he's seen what he can do firsthand and is betting on a rising star in the profession.

Sounds like Day is hiring an OC who will have control over shaping the offensive staff. May also replace ST coach and some defensive coaches as well.

maybe not lgbtqxyz friendly enough for navy? 🤷‍♂️
I think it's more of a Steve Pederson situation where they wanted to take the team another direction and losing to Army a few times in a row didn't help either. The Pentagon only cares about the alphabet stuff and rarely that stuff makes it down to the deckplates from my experience. Plus, the Navy has been dealing with this shit forever and no one rarely cared who's sleeping with who. Politicians make a bigger deal over it then there really needs to be IMO.

I think he knew he was done at the final press conference when he pulled the pin on the grenade and tossed it directly at the AD of the host school (a rival). You did it your way, Jerry. Hat tip.

Have to like the guy for speaking his mind. Hard not to like Jerry. Seems like a genuinely decent guy.
