Was tiger really that good or was it just that his competition was of a lower quality

Mad Max Reaction GIF

O/u for Scottie majors is what? 6.5-8.5? Who’s the last person to win more than 6 besides Tiger? Watson in 1980s? Trevino, Faldo, Phil have 6. Getting to 10 would be incredible, let alone the teens.

Tiger played in an era that had a lot of really good golfers. You could make a solid argument that if it wasn’t for technology advancements in that time Tiger would have won a lot more even with his personal issues

Went through Callaway preowned and filtered out clubs that are like new/very good shape and then found clubs that have a 4.8 rating or higher and then went with the cheapest option

Driver
Wood
Hybrid
Iron set
Pitching wedge
Putter
Sand wedge

Gonna cost me $1,000ish

Still have to buy a golf bag too

What an expensive hobby

You did very well. $2500-$3000 for the whole set if you’re buying off the rack.

Driver - $600
Wood - $350
Hybrid - $300
Iron set - $1000
Pitching wedge $150
Putter - $200
Sand wedge - $200

A good stand bag shouldn’t cost you more than $200, and a thriffworthy man such as yourself could probably find something lightly used in good shape for $50.

I was thinking about getting one of those cheap beginner sets too but it sounds like people end up replacing clubs after a year or so anyway because the quality is low

yoy did it the right way. I bought a nice full set for my wife, think it was taylormade, and it’ll last her a long time, but if you actually get decent you’ll replace those clubs quickly.

He was incredible until he started stopped boozing and whoring around too much.

The field is always going to get better as time goes on.

Like saying Jim Brown wouldn't be as good today because the defenses are bigger and faster. More extreme because more years have passed for Brown but same concept.
He played his best when he was banging everyone who could fog a mirror. Where he really went sideways was when he went nuts and started doing green beret training because he wanted to be like his dad. He got really extreme into that, got hurt, and neglected his golf game. All happened after Earl died.

It’s will to think he was basically doing workouts like an NFL player and playing golf. You look at guys on tour and they aren’t built like Tiger was.

I agree with this. If you go back to 1997 when Tiger won his first major through the 2008 US Open at Torrey (which I think most would consider TW's prime) there were several multi-major winners and some all-timers competing weekly.

Faldo - 6 time major winner (end of his prime, but he had just won the 1996 Masters)
Norman - 331 weeks as world #1, 2 majors. End of his prime, but an all-timer
Phil - 6 majors, the first being the 2004 Masters, so he played in the middle of prime time TW
Els - 4 majors, though the 1994 US Open was pre-TW. One of the best of his era.
Vijay - one of the most underrated player of all-time, IMHO. 3 majors (98, 04 PGAs and 2000 Masters) and 34 PGA Tour wins, all during TW's prime.
Goosen - 2 Majors (2001, 2004 Us Opens) Top 10 in the world for 250 weeks between 2001-07

Angel Cabrera El Pato - Yeah, he's a creep, but the duck could ball. 2 majors (07 US open, 09 Masters).
Padraig Harrington - Another all-time underrated player, but he was REALLY good in his prime, which only lasted briefly, but included 3 majors - 2 Opens 2007, 08 and 1 PGA - 2008. 6 PGA wins, 15 Euro wins.
David Duval - When he played his best, he had a really high, high gear. Feel like he underachieved a bit, but had some injury issues slow him down. 1 Major at the 2001 Open. 13 PGA wins all between 1997-2001. Got to world #1 in 1999.
Sergio - 1 major in 2017, but his prime coincided with TW's. 11 PGA tour wins, 16 Euro Tour Wins. 300 weeks in world top 10 2000-09. Even at all that, still feel like he underachieved.
Furyk - 1 Major 2003 US Open, Top 10 in the world for 440 weeks between 1999-2016. 17 PGA Tour wins.
Mark O'Meara - 2 majors (1998 Masters and Open). Peaked in early TW era, but had 16 PGA wins.

Then you get into some guys who were really good as TW was in his declined:
Rory - Five majors starting in 2011
Bubba - 2012, 14 Masters
Kaymer - 2010 PGA, 2014 US Open
Westwood - #1 in the world 2010. 2 PGA wins, 25 Euro Tour
Adam Scott - 1 major 2013 Masters, #1 in the word 2014, 14 PGA tour wins, 11 Euro Tour wins.

Yeah, Tiger’s problems had zero to do with the women, etc. He’s still probably greatest ever from a mental standpoint and could easily compartmentalize all of that. It’s all injury/training related and then the obvious pain killer abuse that came from all of the injuries. I think we all know he was hopped up on goof balls the day he crashed his car and almost lost his leg.
