Finally got to rewatch the game

Interesting anecdote from very top of Bussin WTB. Taylor was in KC for the game and he said he talked to an NFL scout in the press box and interestingly enough the scout was only there for 3 UC players (TE, DT, QB). And the scout guaranteed it'd be a close game, said UC is gonna be good, etc.

Just more fodder for the "Nebraska barely beat the worst team in the Big 12" crowd.

So there are only 3 potential nfl guys on the roster, yet the scouts thought that the game would certainly be close? That doesn’t sound like a ringing endorsement of where we’re at.

Could be that plus prevent defense plus NU plays it vanilla while Cinci plays it like it’s their Super Bowl.

Remember, there's no real point to looking at FR-SO because they can't enter draft for another 1.5 yrs min.

I would think these JR/SR guys would be getting onto scouts' radars:
  • Wright
  • Spindler
  • Marshall
  • Key
  • Evans
But maybe they're all considered late round or UDFA at this point. IDK

Also, my sense is that scouts are traveling out and spending resources to look at like round 1-3 guys. That DT certainly is.

We don't have any JR/SRs grading at round 1-3 right now I don't think.

Exactly and would we be worried if we only beat Minnesota by 3 this year? What about MSU etc? Id be tickled pink.

Something I haven’t seen brought up or perhaps missed this last week is Matt Rhule’s Year 3 at Baylor. Everyone points to that 11-3 record, but if you look at the scores and the opponents, half of Baylor's 14 games came down to one-score outcomes. They were 5-2 in those games. That would be progress to me given our ineptitude at one-score games, but the rub is some of those games were also against teams with eventual losing records.

Rice (3-9), West Virginia (5-7), Texas Tech (4-8), and TCU (5-7) all came within a score of tying or beating Baylor. TTech forced double overtime. TCU forced triple overtime. Cockeye State (7-6) and Oklahoma (12-2) were the two winning teams Baylor fought within a score, and those results were 1-2.

On the flipside, Baylor's 14+ point wins against 8-5 Texas (who had 3 one-score losses and 2 one-score wins of their own), 8-5 Okie State (2 one-score losses, 3 one-score wins) 8-5 K-State (3 one-score losses, 3 one score wins) were pretty nice wins on paper. They also spanked KU, along with UTSA and Stephen F Austin, all three being putrid.

Close games are ok. Especially early in the season. A Baylor team that was a score away from tying or losing to Rice was also incredibly close to winning the Big 12 Championship. You could argue they were also flirting with a much worse record than they had, but scoreboard is scoreboard in the end, and that team also accomplished over and over and over what Nebraska has failed to do since Mike Riley and win a damn close game. And it's hard to base a season based on a single game. I'm glad we have the win against Cincy, and if we want to recklessly, and truly carelessly extrapolate 2025 Nebraska patterns that align with 2019 Baylor, no other Big 12 team had a better record in one-score games than Baylor that year.

For those hoping that Matt Rhule's Year Three Leap™ still comes to fruition, it is still in play. And it will remain in play, even if some games get a little closer than they "should be".

Great post.. records are always so subjective.

If “we should have won that game.” Were a stat then Nebraska would still be highly respected right now. Instead, all that matters are a w and even people on this board will be using the W vs Cincinnati in a different light if we finish 9-3 and win a bowl. The hype will be unreal next year.

I’m done playing these games. We won, we haven’t won a lot recently and winning is way better than losing. Tired of the negative nothing is good attitude from Nebraska fans.

I swear… it’s the same people sitting on their ass at arrowhead barely saying a word that turn around and bitch about the score or the way the team played. Sometimes I really dislike the whole attitude of the fan base. I do see why Bo eventually soured after the success he had.

Donors of substance likely want to see something more meaningful than a 20-17 win over Cincinnati before the back the truck up.

The staff and the program can’t do it all on their own, aside from winning meaningful games.
I would hope the donors of substance aren’t holding back when we are literally in year 3 already. There isnt a better time to go all in than when you have a 5 star QB fall into your lap

I suspect even at that level you have a similar variation in their engagement and financial commitment as we do at the mere fan level. Some are going to invest heavily, especially with the signing of Raiola, first winning season in a while, first bowl game, etc. Others are still in a relative ‘Prove it’ mode. I get it.

As others have said, we win more football games, especially against a name opponent, and the NIL money will come in.

Is the Hausman guy still a big donor or did he stop when his drinking buddy was let go

Well here’s to winning then. Still think Dylan did us a disservice by not committing earlier. We could have built a legit ‘24 class around him, also had Sam Leavitt in the bag potentially (baller)

I don’t know the names of the donors, so I’m not sure.

Yep. We need to win.

On Raiola’s late commit, it likely would have helped to have him in the fold earlier. That said, I can’t blame the kid for how the whole thing went down. I know I’d have looked elsewhere when Frost was the HC, and it’s hard to blame a player for signing with a defending National Champion.
