DL Coach Hawt Board v2.0

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Strohmeier has had tens of offers to be on a P4 staff. Would it have made him immediately a better football coach if he took one of those offers?

Did Kalen Doboer immediately become a better football coach when Tom Allen hired him out of a D3(?) school?

Did it make Joe Moorhead immediately better when James Franklin hired him from the FCS?

Did Chip Kelly become immediately better when he was hired to Oregon from a lower level?

Did Cignetti’s coordinators become immediately better when they got to Indiana?

Is Donnie Raiola now better than Bill O’Boyle (I went there @slattimer) because Donnie was at a Big Ten program?

Did Chris Peterson immediately become better when he got the job at Washington?

I’m not saying that every time you have an opening that you’ve got to take a lower level guy. That’s ridiculous. What I am saying is when you consistently produce the RESULTS that far exceed the expectations of your current position it’s worth looking at.

Everybody loved Terrance Knighton and the dude had much less coaching experience than Aaron does.
I came to this thread looking to buy a Mercedes Benz but it would appear that I’m going home in a Chevy Trail Boss with a 6 inch lift riding on 35s. Buyers remorse be damned, let’s floor it bitches.

As a rule, I’ve been opposed to bringing in position coaches with a dearth of high-level coaching experience.

BUT…

The Portal/NIL era has swayed me to believing that CFB is much more about talent acquisition than coaching. And if hiring this dude could guarantee bringing in:

That’s an idea I could potentially get behind.
Lubin already re-signed with Louisville, so good luck with that one:

Maybe this all works out. But it would really be nice if our DL plan was something better thought out than “wait until the portal has been open more than week and then hire a juco coach and hope he can bring guys from several different schools that he’s not currently coaching to provide you the bodies and talent you haven’t figured out any other way to attract.”

IF we end up going this direction, 3-4 of these guys HAVE TO be a part of the deal or it’s too big of a risk IMO.

We’ve all pounded the table and constantly demanded we get things in the offseason for 10 years whether it’s coaches or players.

We tend to get what we want. And we tend to be impressively wrong about what results it’ll produce.

If Aaron is the hire he’s definitely not first or second choice.

I don't think this is a coincidence. I don't remember the last time someone from IWCC was offered let alone visited.

Quientrail Travis and Anterio Thompson, two DL that visited in the fall of 2022 that Frost was very interested in, Thompson was a home opener visitor. Of course Frost was fired.

Longval and Hohl are both IWCC guys.

keep gassin' up a career juco position coach
My fear is that we'd get blasted by negative recruiting if we took a career JUCO coach, even if he is a good coach. For recruiting talented kids who can't make it into a D1 school he might be fine, but I am afraid top DLs out of HS would not be interested in his recruiting.

If they want to hire him as just as, in effect, an assistant DL coach, fine, then if he is productive they might have something to sell if he was later promoted from within in 2-3 years.

I mean this with all sincerity and am genuinely curious. In your opinion why then hasn’t he moved up the ranks?
From Omaha metro, lives in Omaha metro. Could be several reasons but no one can say he isnt a good coach. I know he likes his HC.

All im saying is we could do a helluva lot worse and if this mends the IWCC pipeline its well fucking worth it as they still have D1 players hanging out in their hallways

I know I'm the founder of the HES, but I have been quietly pretty pessimistic with how the DL coaching search has been handled. And I'm not just saying this from the HES perspective, if this ends up being the hire, I kind of love it. He has been elite at developing DL at IWCC. He has players that he could POTENTIALLY poach some instant impact guys. I'd actually be pretty excited about this hire.
I actually wouldn’t hate an Aaron Terry hire, a pretty large step up in competition but dude has put a lot of guys into P5 programs and the NFL. Makes more sense if he’s coming in just to focus on the inside guys too.

are there IWCC guys who went straight to the NFL?
If not, he didn't put them there, any more than a HS coach put his former players in the NFL.

I think that primarily he gets guys into 4 year schools.

Good point, however if he comes to Nebraska he has the opportunity to put a lot of Juco talent into the NFL.

After a little research he’s put 5 players into the NFL straight out of IWCC.

I forgot about those DL guys was a big deal at the time if I remember right. I think I have a mental block on most of the Frost era ☠️.

Good catch on Longval and Hohl feels like I used to know at least something about everyone on the roster, not so much anymore unfortunately.

in normal troglodyte fashion I did some internet sleuthing. Burburija was supposed to visit Michigan state today but he cancelled last night. He previously bragged about having a PSU offer but PSU said this was false and he ended up not visiting there either. Did have an offer for an OV. Not sure how legit the Clemson offer is.

FWIW I don’t know how likely we are to get a proven p4 DL coach at this point in the game. Who would move to Lincoln knowing odds are they’ll get fired in a year or two no matter how good they are

We're not firing Rhule in a year unless we only win 2-3 games. Too expensive.

ACs sign two-year contracts - they move all the time.
