DL Coach Hawt Board v2.0

It sounds like Dave Tollefson may have a role in DL coaching in 26 according to Fat Sam.

Why? Honest question. He seems to be universally respected. Is it a recruiting thing?
Yes, it’s a recruiting thing.

With each passing year, I become more and more convinced that CFB is a talent acquisition contest. You want your coaches to be good coaches, obviously, but bringing in someone with 0 college coaching experience would be foolish in this day and age of CFB.

Completely understand this point.

I saw a Twitter post today from Dan Casey who listed the four questions T. O. asked when hiring a coach and ability to teach was 4th. In the first 3 were characteristics required in recruiting.

"I've been saying it for a long time, I will not hire an assistant coach until I've seen his wife. "If she looks the part, and she's a D-1 recruit, then you got a chance to get hired. That's part of the deal. "There's a very strong correlation between having the confidence, going up and talking to a woman, and being quick on your feet and having some personality and confidence and being fun and articulate, than it is walking into a high school and recruiting a kid and selling him."

Above is James Franklin circa 2012. Lane Kiffin said similar years later.

What the scoop here? Why was he let go?
Ron English requested to be let go so he could spend a year watching his son's final season playing football at Navy. They were Co-DC at Louisville & coached quite a few years together. Figure Brohm is going to let new DC hire build his own staff out. Thought Louisville had a pretty decent D overall this past year.

Thanks. Just wondering why we would be interested in someone who was relieved of their job. Didn’t know how Louisville’s D was this year.

Report: Louisville DC Ron English, DL Coach Mark Hagen Not Returning

"Louisville finished this past season at 9-4 overall primarily thanks to English guiding their efforts on the defensive side of the ball. As of games played through Dec. 29, the Cardinals' 303.1 yards allowed per games ranks 17th in the FBS and second in the ACC, while their 21.2 points allowed per games came in at 37th and fifth, respectively.

As part of that success this past season, UofL also got good production out of their defensive line under Hagen. Defensive end Clev Lubin had a monster season, logging 13.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, five pass breakups and three forced fumbles. He earned Third-Team All-ACC honors, defensive tackle Rene Konga collected Second-Team All-ACC honors, while tackle Jordan Guerad and edge rushers Wesley Bailey and A.J. Green also posted good seasons.

English and Hagen both followed Brohm from Purdue after he took the Louisville head coaching job in 2023. The Cardinals had a very good first season on the defensive side of the ball, with their 317.1 yards and 21.3 points allowed per games ranking 21st and 33rd in the nation, respectively. This helped fuel the Cardinals to a 10-4 season, which included their first ever berth in the ACC Championship Game.

In year two under Brohm, Louisville's efforts on defensive took a step backwards. They gave up 368.7 yards and 24.1 points per game, which ranked 64th and 56th, respectively, in the FBS. Though the Cardinals still finished that season at 9-4, including wins over Clemson, Kentucky, and vs. Washington in the Sun Bowl."

LOL reminds me of Curb where they invest in a company because the guy had a fat wife (and thus determine he's loyal and trustworthy)
