Ok, so bear with me here....the following happened last night about 12:00 am to me and my family on hwy 71 about 40 miles north of Scottsbluff. I'm typing on my phone so don't go grammar police on me. It's also gonna be long, but I swear this shit really happened!
My family and I took a mini vacation to the black hills on Saturday/Sunday. We stayed in Rapid City until about 10 pm for a music festival. It's a 3-3.5 hour drive back to Scottsbluff so obviously we would be driving late and get home around 1 am. Nothing out of the ordinary besides seeing a couple deer and almost hitting a raccoon. Its about 12:00 and I'm getting a little tired and my eyes are starting to play tricks on me, but we're on the last 30-40 minutes so I'm powering through with sunflower seeds. I know the road pretty well so I hit a stretch where I kick it up to 80 mph. All of a sudden I see something in the road. It looks like a deer and I slam on the brakes, but it's not a deer. It's a young woman standing in the middle of the highway only wearing her underwear, but no bra. I'm still uncertain how I got stopped and keep seeing that image of her in my headlights and just all the thoughts running through my head.
Slamming on the brakes makes stuff fly everywhere and wakes up everyone. My wife is trying to figure out what's going on and I'm like " is that a fucking naked girl on the road?" This naked girl is standing there waving her arms and starts coming towards my pickup. I immediately put it in reverse and start backing up. My first instinct is it's a freaking trap and my wife and kids are in serious danger.
My wife immediately is on the phone with 911 and the girl keeps walking towards me and I keep backing up looking all around for a car or people coming out of the ditch to attack us. This goes on for about 100 yards and what spooked us the most was about 200-300 yards out in the pasture was what appeared to be flashing tail lights behind us. From my view in the mirror I think its a reflection of my hazzard lights. Finally I yell out the window to her we have help coming and I will get her clothes but she has to stop walking. She won't stop so she comes to the window and says she needs help and she was abducted and dumped out here.
So against my wife's wishes, I get out and get her a blanket from the bed of my pickup. Again, she is only wearing underwear so I figured she didn't have a weapon. I get her wrapped in the blanket and sit her up on tailgate. I then started asking questions: are you hurt? Name, where are you from, how did you get here. Anyone else out here. Are the people who took you still here? I ask her several times if she is alone and she says yes every time.
She seems to give legit answers to the questions and she's obviously been drinking or on drugs. She admits to booze, but no drugs. She only says her feet are hurt from walking barefoot. It didnt appear she was beaten or hurt, but since she was naked I didnt want to look. We then decided to bring her to the front seat since it's kinda chilly out and she's freezing.
She gets in and is just kinda off and on with her words and emotions. Says she's 20 years old from Valentine. Keeps crying for her dad, but can't remember his phone number. Cops and EMS are on the way at this point. We're trying to keep her comfortable with some water and general questions. Says 4 Hispanic guys kidnapped her, beat her and then dumped her. Says she's the only one out here and been here for 4 hours. At some points she talks normal and then looks at me like I'm the bad guy. I still think she was on drugs. She was so confused when I told her the phone we were talking to 911 was not hers. She kept saying her dad's number was in the phone.
So after what seems like 40 minutes the first NSP shows up, he was a long ways away He starts questioning her. Same kinda stuff as I asked and she gives the same answers. We offer her a shirt, pants and sandals and she puts it on and stays in my vehicle while speaking to the police. All while my 12, 9 and 5 year old kids are in the back with my wife. I'm behind the vehicle giving cop #2 my statement.
Ok, so at this point it appears we have just found an abducted young lady in the middle of no where. Cop #1 gets a little more info out of her and thinks this may not be the first time this has happened. It's at this moment I tell cop #2 how I feel bad about backing up and the reason was the flashing light in the distance. We look but cant see it until he stands on his toes a little. It's hard to see from our vantage point, but if I stood on my tailgate I could see it. So it appears it's down in a ravine or low spot. He decided to go see what it is. In that moment dispatch calls with a vehicle description of what is maybe tied to this scenario.
Here's where it gets strange. So ambulance shows up and cop #2 has to walk out in the pasture to check these lights. Sure as shit its the car dispatch called about! Oh and there is an injured lady in the front passenger seat! WTF is what I'm thinking now. We are all really confused now. Cop #1 then says he thinks they stole the car and the passenger is her step mom. I offer to help because they need a 4x4 to get in the field, but he says no thanks since they have a 4x4 ems vehicle.
So we leave and I'm telling my wife how I swear there was something at her feet in the road when we first saw here. Sure as shit we drive up the hill and there lies a pair of jean shorts in the road! It appears she took her clothes off at some point after the crash. Its so freaking bizarre!
Sooooo, did this girl basically crash this car while being drunk or on drugs and make up this story about being abducted and raped to try to get out of it? When was she gonna tell anyone about the other person in the car? Had I not mentioned the lights that made us so cautious we all probably drive off leaving that other lady there.
So we roll into town around 2 am and everyone was wide awake. I still can't get that image of her standing on the highway. It scared the shit out of us and continued to just get stranger as time wore on. It was like something out of a dream or a movie. Then her stumbling towards us for 5 minutes was just so bizarre. I feel bad for doing that, but I had to be sure my family was safe first.
Also at one point before I got her wrapped in a blanket, she was still in front of my pickup walking towards us, a car comes from the opposite direction and had to see what was going on. They didn't stop but I hope they at least called 911. From their view I bet it looked bad.
After doing a Google search of her name it appears she has been listed as a runaway 3 years ago and got a DUI in Box Butte County in June with some drug possession too.
I'm hoping my kids will not be too shaken up by this and it will turn into a lesson. I also will now be carrying my pistol with me when we do stuff like this. I obviously wouldn't have needed it but if the first story were real then it would make me feel better.
Hopefully this girl can get some help and turn her life around. She clearly needs it.
Update: State patrol called and gave me info on the situation we experienced. It basically is a drunk driving case. He said had we not done what we did the passenger in the car most likely dies. She was extremely intoxicated and in and out of consciousness. She was also aspirating. Had we not noticed the car who knows what happens. The naked gal is in jail and quite a bit of trouble.
