Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule met with the media on Monday afternoon, as the Huskers turn their attention to this week’s road trip at Colorado.

— Rhule confirmed that wide receiver Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda will miss the season with torn ACL suffered against Minnesota. Rhule said they’ll see how ready linebackers Jimari Butler and Nick Henrich will be for Colorado this week.

— Nebraska quarterback Jeff Sims was in the facility this weekend going through film after his three-pick performance against Minnesota. Rhule said Sims hadn’t been trending the way he played against Minnesota during fall camp.

“I think you find out about people when they go through a little adversity,” Rhule said.

— Rhule said the combination of coaching, scheme and personnel makes sense in the altitude of Colorado. Rhule said Colorado has outside players with elite ball skills and will force Nebraska to defend the whole field sideline to sideline, while also defending 10 deep ball shots through the game.

— Rhule said Nebraska will need to tackle well against Colorado’s players in space. The first-year Husker head coach noted that Nebraska went against tempo throughout fall camp.

“It just has to be football — if we do that, we’ll have a chance,” Rhule said.

— Rhule said there was a lot of good in Thursday’s game against Minnesota. “Unfortunately we made a lot of catastrophic errors,” he said.

— Nebraska had Saturday off, but Rhule said there were a ton of players in the facility getting treatment and preparing for Colorado week.

— Rhule said he wasn’t surprised by what Colorado did in week one. Rhule said Sanders and Colorado have his respect.

“Coach Sanders is a football guy,” Rhule said. “You can watch all this stuff on TV, but when has he ever not been serious about football? He’s won as a player, he’s won as a coach. Everybody thinks this is a show and an act, but he’s the most serious player about football, why would we not think his players would be to?”

— Rhule said Colorado corner/wide receiver Travis Hunter is one of the most conditioned athletes he’s seen. Rhule said Hunter’s ability to accelerate at 30 yards is hard to simulate in practice.

“They’re going to throw the ball down the field 10 times per game at minimum,” Rhule said. “You have to play the ball.”

— Rhule said he liked how his defensive line performed against Minnesota. Nebraska will be without Ty Robinson in the first half, but Rhule said Robinson’s level of football in the first half was “really impressive.”

— Rhule said he couldn’t see much of a difference between the first and second linebackers when they entered the game against Minnesota. He highlighted Javin Wright for his development, and said NFL scouts frequently ask about Wright when they come through and scout the Huskers.

— Rhule said with the new clock rules, it was felt how short the first half was against Minnesota.

— You may see Tommi Hill a bit more on offense. Rhule said there were a couple plays for Hill on offense, and the coaching staff knew that Hill would be able to run by his defender.

“As we move forward, seeing the kind of shape that Tommi is in, and his mental toughness I really like, it remains to be seen, but maybe he’ll have more roles on offense,” Rhule said.

— Rhule said they need to find a way to get Billy Kemp IV going in offense.

“For us to have a chance against a team like this, we’re going to have to make some plays,” Rhule said.

— Nebraska’s offensive line played well, Rhule said. He noted that had Nebraska fumbled the ball late, Nebraska could have run the ball out. Colorado’s twitchy edge rushers will test the Husker offensive line this week,” Rhule said.

“When you have four turnovers, it’s really hard to wear out your opponent,” Rhule said.

— Rhule was encouraged by the Huskers’ time of possession against Minnesota.
