Carlon Jones commitment: What does it mean for Nebraska?

2024 Nebraska DL commit Carlon Jones.

Make it 16 commits for Nebraska over the last 22 days in June. On Thursday, the Huskers added a commit from Bay City (Texas) defensive lineman Carlon Jones.

Here are some quick takes and thoughts on the commitment of Jones and what it means for the Huskers.

NU is now up to 22 commits in its class of 2024 with the addition of Jones.

1. Nebraska fills a major need in the class with Jones’ commitment. NU already had a defensive line commit from Elkhorn South’s Ashton Murphy, but they needed another big body to add to the class. His commitment helps fill that void.

2. You can understate how important the state of Texas is for Matt Rhule in recruiting. The Huskers now have seven commits in the class of 2024 from the state of Texas, and they added six recruits and one transfer from Texas over the 2023 cycle.

3. Give defensive line coach Terrance Knighton a lot of credit here. He is the Houston-area recruiter for Texas and won a pretty good battle for Jones after he took official visits to TCU, Cal and Oklahoma State after his trip to Lincoln. Knighton has quietly become a very good recruiter in his young coaching career.

4. At 6-foot-4, 260-pounds Jones has a very good frame to build on. It will be interesting to see how much more weight Nebraska wants to add to his frame in the future. Is he a guy that will play closer to 280 to 290 pounds someday? At 260 pounds, Jones already moves at a very high level and plays with great explosiveness.

5. Jones played high school football in 2022 with 2023 Nebraska wide receiver recruit Brice Turner. I’m sure that relationship played a big factor as well.

6. June has been one of the wilder months in recruiting we’ve ever seen at Nebraska. Jones is now the 16th commit the Big Red has added over the last 22 days. I’m not sure back in early June anyone could’ve predicted we’d say the Huskers at 22 commits on June 29.

7. Now, how much more room is left in the 2024 Husker recruiting class? They appear to be full at many positions. One of the big needs is on the line at offensive tackle. They would also like to add another pass rusher to the class.

Kaelin will make composite 4 start for sure. Not sure I see quite as many as you.
Hall
McMorris
McGahee
Flynt
Lacy
Carlon Jones

These are all guys that I wouldn't be surprised at all if they ended up as 4-stars. Will all of them get the bump? Almost assuredly no. But all of them are on the fringe of getting the bump.

Hall is already a composite 4 star. That's a ton of ground for the others to make up. Lacy could do it with a huge year. Perhaps McMorris with another great year.

That was the 2020 class. The 2019 had a bunch of overrated guys and/or lack of development. One didn't make it in Desmond Bland. A few transferred but they never played. Jamie Nance, Jackson Hannah and NPG.
Sad that all 3 of those guys seemed like pretty good gets when they signed
