Bill Walton

Daddy made whiskey and he made it well.
Cost two dollars and it burned like hell.
I cut hickory just to fire the still,
Drink down a bottle and be ready to kill.

(72 Europe is my favorite style because it's a little slower and I prefer that pace for this song, especially Garcia's guitar)

@God is a Husker I have been a big music fan from the time I was very young. Been to hundreds and hundreds of shows, own hundreds of Vinyls, CDs, Casettes, Etc. over the last couple years I’ve come to have more time with work where I can put my headphones in or when I work from home have the black circles turning. As a result ive picked one band a week and spend the whole week deep diving in to the them. For example last week was Blackfoot, week before that was King Crimson, week before that was little feat, you get the idea. I’ve had my eyes on doing this for the dead but with the absolutely treasure trove that is their live work I’ve been intimidated on where to start with them. Anyone who is a dead head I’d appreciate their take on where to start

I had the privilege of meeting and having dinner with Coach John Wooden in Palm Springs some 20 years ago at a business function. I sat right across from him. He was well into his 90s but just as sharp as when he coached.

I asked him who the best player he ever coached was and he said that's a two part answer. Bill Walton had the most God given ability and without the injuries to his knees and back would have been in the running to challenge Wilt, Kareem and Bill Russell for the GOAT title. He said the best player that did the most with the ability he was given was Jamaal Keith Wilkes. He still called him Keith by the way. Wilkes was the hardest worker he ever coached.

I'm a picky "Dead head" in that I only like their older stuff (60s/70s) and I usually only like their songs that are much more blues/country rock than their more progressive psychedelic songs. Like everybody loves touch of grey because it kicked off their resurgence in the 80s. I'm not a fan because of the music style.

I am 33 so obviously when I first listened to them it was decades afree everything happened and it was only Dead and Co. on tour (John Mayer is great) so I didn't like grow up with the band like many dead heads did from being there from the 60s up through now.

PS: Going to a Dead and Company concert is like what going to a Jimmy Buffet or Bob Seger concert was like. Average age of the crowd is 60+ and the entire concert was just hit after hit after hit song. Never a moment to grab a beer or pee during a bad song because they have so many great songs a set list is easy to fill up with nothing but greats.

I'm a huge Dead fan. Saw them twice this weekend in Vegas. Wild news to wake up to.

Never met Bill but I've seen him at shows which must have taken an insane toll on his body over the past few years. Always smiling though. A lot of people I've met on tour have awesome things to say about their interactions with him. He brought almost everyone he met joy.

My favorite jam in honor. RIP
