Michael Terry III was set on making a summer commitment, but it seems more likely that his decision is one of the few that will carry into the fall.
Nebraska,
Oregon,
Texas and
Texas A&M are the finalists, but sources near the versatile playmaker feel it will come down to three programs.
The 6-foot-3, 217-pound prospect is the nation's No. 1 ATH and No. 7 overall prospect in Texas.
With the season drawing closer, we checked in with sources near Terry to get the latest on where his recruitment stands. From what we've heard, this journey still has a few miles to go.
Terry told 247Sports that it's likely he will carry his recruitment into the fall, and a source close to him confirmed that Terry isn't ready to make a decision any time soon. Texas, Oregon, Nebraska and Texas A&M make up Terry's finalists, but Texas A&M appears to be on the outside, according to the sources we spoke with.
In July, Texas and Oregon were being talked about as the leaders who had distanced themselves from the pack. Nebraska was able to get Terry back to campus to end the July visit window and put themselves back into the mix.
The source we spoke with said that Matt Rhule's approach to the recruitment has been relentless, and the family likes how Nebraska is run like an NFL organization. This source mentioned that Terry was intrigued by the nutrition program and facilities at Nebraska.
Time will tell if the Huskers can ultimately win out, but they are certainly in the thick of the race. Oregon and Texas have an advantage when it comes to the level their programs are at and the ways in which they proposed to use Terry. The source we spoke with told 247Sports that Texas and Oregon's status as contenders compared to Nebraska's rebuilding effort has been discussed.
Terry's future position is in question given his size and skillset, but Texas and Oregon are proposing more diverse usage as both a receiver and running back while Nebraska is pitching him on playing only at receiver. The same source mentioned Oregon's staff and their all-out effort to recruit him. Oregon offensive coordinator
Will Stein was singled out for his effort in building the relationship and showing Terry how much he's wanted.
One connection that's helped Oregon is former Duck's star
De'Anthony Thomas. The family met Thomas while on a visit and built a strong bond. Thomas still lives in Eugene close to the Oregon campus, and he's been a resource for Terry as he goes through the recruitment.
Texas represents the program with the best combination of high-level football and proximity as Austin is just over an hour from San Antonio, but the source we spoke with said that proximity isn't a major factor at this point.
For Terry, the delay in his announcement is simply because he's not ready to make a decision. The focus has been on making the right choice and not rushing into a quick decision or putting himself on an arbitrary timeline. We were told that Terry isn't stressing over the decision and has turned his focus to his senior season.
Expect Terry to take some fall visits to programs to see games and on-campus atmosphere. While nothing has been set in stone, Terry and his family are considering a return to Lincoln to see Nebraska host
Colorado Sept. 7.
