I think them packing it in for 2022 had more to do with COVID. They couldn't bring 2022 recruits to games last year or to campus and so they couldn't build any relationships. Then they struggled over the summer. Then they decided that they would be better off focusing their HS recruiting efforts on 2023. I am also willing to bet that they didn't think they were going to go 3-9. They thought they were going to have a good year and then they could go grab some good players from the portal to fill out our 2022 recruiting.I can understand them packing it in as they probably figured they would be fired after losing all 4 seasons.
That's a pretty poor excuse. You never, ever punt on an entire recruiting class. How many other teams just said "fuck it" and mailed it in for the 2022 class? Probably not many, if any P5 programs.I think them packing it in for 2022 had more to do with COVID. Whatever it was, was truly embarrassing and lazy. Once again set the program back. Other programs didn't seen to have to rely on the Covid excuse for recruiting. We had the best Instate Talent we have had in a long long time, and pretty much struck out on the big Instate recruits. I want results, not excuses and unfortunately the only consistent with this staff is excuses for Loses, Recruiting, ....... Winner's find a way to Win, Losers make excuses.I think them packing it in for 2022 had more to do with COVID. i lol'd at first, but if this kid or the kid from KS (5* kicker rating) were with us in 2021 hitting all XP's and 80%+ of their kicks, not punting it the wrong direction, that probably equates to 2-3 more wins this year. Maybe more.At least we got that kicker this weekend
They've been playing the Covid excuse for some time now, so has Deab. But what chaps my ass is when they come out with the "Well, Frost cares SO much about Nebraska." Blah Blah Blah...then what the fuck you doing crooting like this for.Whatever it was, was truly embarrassing and lazy. Once again set the program back. If it's actually what they did, then I think at the time that it made sense. If we had gone 8-4 or better this past season, as we should have, then we would have been able to go out into the portal and get some dudes, and we are in great shape for 2023 recruiting. That's a pretty poor excuse. I have been consistent that I thought they need to use the portal harder this year than they typically might want to.That's a pretty poor excuse. You never, ever punt on an entire recruiting class. Never makes sense to punt an entire class. The class of HS signees was going to be small, I get that - but you never, ever aim low and settle for shit quality. Especially not when the quantity you can take is limited. If it's actually what they did, then I think at the time that it made sense. I think recruiting is a little different now than in the past, thanks to the portal. You can backfill classes.
I'm not talking numbers. I agree that the portal was going to have to be used bigly and the number of HS signees was going to be low IOT balance out the roster -- but damn, it's like they didn't even try with the HS kids.I have been consistent that I thought they need to use the portal harder this year than they typically might want to.
About 70% of their scholarships right now have 3+ years to play ball.
I felt like they needed to invest in the portal more than adding more HS kids.
Now does that mean it is OK to recruit poorly for few spots? Hell no.
I do think what @Kaladin said about relationship building has really hurt them in getting some bigger croots in this class.
Just my opinion.

Ya I'm only really intrigued by about half the class. Jones is the only one I'm really excited about.I'm not talking numbers. Agreed. I'm pretty high on Hausmann too though, I think he could be pretty good. Still not an instant impact candidate though.Ya I'm only really intrigued by about half the class. Jones is the only one I'm really excited about.
The rest of this class has some serious development to go before it is ready.
Yeah he would fall into the I am intrigued, but needs some work. Most of the Nebraska kids really do too.Agreed. I'm pretty high on Hausmann too though, I think he could be pretty good. Still not an instant impact candidate though.
They never really even had relationships with top prospects so it seems like they weren't all that committed to actually doing that. You don't just call up top players and say "look here pal, we're 7-0 so you better get your ass on a plane to Lincoln if you don't want to miss out"Wasn't part of the "strategy" that we were going to show the world and win a bunch of games and then the recruits would make like that place where the beer flows like wine.
it's like when your wife is planning a huge party on saturday and gives you a list of things to get done. But you look at the forceast and it says there will be a blizzard saturday, so you just blow off the list and do nothing because the party is just going to get cancelled. then you wake up saturday and there's no storm. What the fuck were they doing crooting wise this year?
Slow playing our planned 10-2 rebound season, apparently? What the fuck were they doing crooting wise this year?
