The
Ole Miss Spirit held its weekly,
message-board-exclusive AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Wednesday, with topics ranging from the abrupt portal departures of football Rebels Tywone Malone and Markevious Brown, to the current recruiting cycle and more.
.
Kameron Bell asked:
What are you thoughts (on Malone, Brown and Ole Miss safety Elijah Sabbatini entering the NCAA Transfer Portal)?
BEN GARRETT (SpiritBen): I think both (Malone and Brown) got in as negotiating tactics for higher NIL deals. Elijah Sabbatini just wasn’t going to play. The other two are using their leverage and seeing what they can possibly get on the market.
LandSharkD44 asked:
I assume these defensive transfers entering the portal were not going to start but were going to play (and) Golding is planning on a big spring cycle haul? Am I just being optimistic or is this feeling within (the Ole Miss Spirit) team?
BEN GARRETT (SpiritBen): I think they’ll add at least three on defense in this second portal window.
ExcessAintRebellion asked:
In the case of, say, Malone, would you say it’s likely he already has knowledge of back-channel interest before entering the portal? Or, and I doubt it, is he going in blind to who his suiters would be?
BEN GARRETT (SpiritBen): He knows. To be honest, the only surprising thing here is Malone waited until now. The timeline is weird, but I wrote about him as a transfer candidate in the winter. Like (former Ole Miss cornerback Davison) Igbinosun (now at Ohio State), he’s a (former Ole Miss defensive coordinator Chris) Partridge guy.
More pressing, though, he wants more NIL money.
Baller asked:
Do you think we are trying hard to convince Malone to stay with increased NIL monies???
BEN GARRETT (SpiritBen): I think they’ll continue to engage him because they like the player, but his ask is absurdly high right now.
ExcessAintRebellion asked:
I am assuming (Malone) gets football NIL money, right? And that would be what he is out there negotiating on? How many schools in Power 5 are going feel like it’s a good deal to pay him competitive football NIL when it seems as if he is missing as much football as he is practicing/playing?
BEN GARRETT (SpiritBen): Yes, he gets NIL money from football. I’m assuming possible suitors would want a full-on commitment to football before committing the NIL dollars to him he’s currently demanding.
If he’s really wanting what we’ve heard he’s wanting, well, he’s gonna have to give up baseball.
