Football 2025 Fall Camp Thread

My question is the same every year. And it’s not been up to par. Last year was probably the first year in awhile the OL has been actually improved.

What will it look like this year? I like Holgo. How will the offense develop and look going into this year. As it seems we have more weapons on the outside. And another year of improvement up front.

If that OL is good. Like. Top 5 of the conference good. That will make life a lot easier. Especially on defense as they break in some new guys up front. Control the game and/or score enough to get the opposition into a game where you know what’s coming.

It seems every year. The OL is touted as this vast improvement….mostly big Deab the dipshit and crew who don’t know dick anyways. But if they can improve as much as they did last year. Then I’m optimistic.
OL is one of the the biggest drivers of optimism for me.

We have continually stacked good recruiting classes and we have a good transfer portal group.

There is less drama this year with Mazzcua being gone.

Gottula got a B1G season of experience and will be ready to fill in somewhere or win the RT spot.

We don’t need Teddy or Corcoran but they could both provide depth and experience.

Holgo is a much better play caller and will set them up to be successful.

In your professional opinion as a ball knower, how much of a difference can an OC make with play selection to mask a trash line or make a mediocre line look good?
Good OC is going to use numbers, leverage, grass, and just shear advantages in personnel to make the offense go within their scheme. I think Holgo is good at running stuff they've practice a lot, and is in the gameplan. Not some shoot from the hip stuff. But good OC's IMO just have a feel for the game. They get a feel for what the defense is trying to do. Plus having a good idea what their rules are for the most part, can set up plays for success. That and just being situationally sound and the players knowing situations, they'll have a good idea what is coming next.

There's also times they just need to out execute the opposition, even if they have a good idea what's coming. Like last year, if Nebraska was in any form of bunch 3x1, no matter the combo on the field, or motion to a compressed 3x1 look, you can be about 100% sure, they were running Duo. Like clockwork.

In terms of making a subpar OL look good, have to figure out how to lighten the box and run schemes they're confident in and can execute. It also helps when you can threaten the defense vertically. Which it seemed under Frost outside of the 1st year, they had little chance of actually threaten the defense vertically, so they could still spread out and then play down on the run and not worry about shit.

I'm hopeful of all that as well....but I've also seen what's happened with the OL for what...the last decade...where it's continually touted as being "much improved." I'm still in the wait and see camp.

Plus, I'm really interested schematic wise...what are they going to be? Donnie is the run game coord, so I'm guessing they're still going to run a bunch of duo and tight zone. Under Rhule and even Holgo, have some roots running power and counter...personally wish we'd run those more. Then...what are they going to pair it all up with? What personnel is going to be their base? Offenses under Rhule have trended more towards 11/12 personnel, Holgo has kind of been all over, but has adapted to his guys, especially at WVU.

My guess, we're a lot of 12 and 11.

I'd add regarding Holgo he's just plain a better coach of QB's and he is I am certain better at game planning.

I’d also add to the OL, I’m interested to see if we get better blocking in the run game from the TE spot.

There were times when Fidone really struggled.

Has there been anything written or researched regarding Holgorsen's use of tight ends? We have two blocking tight ends in Lindenmeyer and Markway, and then we've got a receiving tight end in Nelson, and then whatever Haarberg is supposed to be. I'm curious how Holgorsen is going to utilize everyone.

I just took a quick look at the receiving stats for WVU from 2011-2018 and Houston from 2019-2023. Prior to 2018 TEs were basically non-existent, but after that year Holgerson seemed to use them more and had at least one TE in the top 5 in receptions most years
