There was a period of time where there was a "theory" that defenses like the 3 - 3 - 5 and the 4 - 2 - 5 were going to end the need for a nose tackle. However as recent years has proven the NFL and B1G and SEC teams are largely returning to, or have never stopped, using nose tackles (though that name isn't actually valid because the 0 - 3 tech is what we are really doing now). There may be schemes that are in incorporated in general defensive styles that use less 0 - 3s but they all realize that unless you are in the MW or possibly the Big XII, you are going to face opponents where you need one.

That situation never even ever began to occur in the B1G especially nor the SEC to a lesser degree.

I'm saying that we don't have someone built to play the A Gap. We have DTs who can handle the B Gap. What I am looking for here is someone who can, if required, line up over a center and make running the ball through the A Gap unlikely or on a double team by a Center Guard combo. Someone who in pass coverage who can fill the bottom of the pocket on contain also.

A gap is Center to Guard. B gap is guard to tackle.

Back in the Bo days, Bo would make recruiting DTs difficult because he wanted them to two Gap (play A & B) that is pretty rare now in CFB. We had someone who could do that when we had Ty, but Ty was really a unicorn, because he could play virtually any place on a DL. That is why he will have a long career in the NFL because with him on your roster you're in a good place on a travel roster.

There are very few war daddies out there. And quite frankly. We aren’t getting them. Plus. We aren’t playing an odd front anymore. Nor did we play a 2 gapping odd in the first place under TW, at least in the traditional since of a 3-4 with the 0 being the true war daddy.

Your 3 tech is your best pass rusher on the interior. Mainly because of the 1:1 nature they will draw because of half slide rules.

I’m not a big, this guy has to be this body type to play a position. But do we have body types that fit the above narrative of some 6’2 335 lb war daddy and a 6’4 295 lb Suh clone. Then the answer is obvious.
