2024-25 Portal SZN Thread

It really isn't a mystery. Guys on offense who had attitude issues seem to be hitting the portal. Boerkircher is the lone exception. I don't think Rhule and Holgs wanted him to leave.

HG has said that Boerk asked to come back and we told him "thanks, but no thanks." It was surprising to me too, but it sounds like the coaches are confident with Lindenmeyer and Haarberg for next year.

Regarding Pritchett, the guy was a full time starter for Alabama. He graded out piss poor by PFF, but why wouldn’t they replace him if he was that bad? Those ratings are like Nebraska Long Snapper bad. My guess is something else was going on there. Formby and McVay, the next two most played tackles, had pretty similar PFF scores. So, all of bama’s OT’s are shit other than Proctor, or something is up with how PFF grades a bama OT.

IMO, we take this kid as a RT. I’d rather Gottula be our LT. But Teddy and Pritchett battling it out as the RT could be good. The biggest pause I have about him is that story about him spreading STD’s. Maybe this kid has some mental problems.

George FItzpatrick would be “fighting” for the job with Gottula, but my guess is Gottula wins. So, Fitzpatrick would be our rotational OT like Teddy was a couple years ago.

We need 2 OT’s, anyway. Teddy is going to get hurt again, and we don’t have any experience at OT other than him. If we can grab both of these players, or players of their caliber, it’ll be a good thing.
Yes, they had a huge drop-off after Proctor at tackle. McVay was the LT back-up, so this wasn't a right side of the line problem.

I am beginning to think that the plan was to go with Gottula at LT the entire time - I think I just assumed we'd take a LT, but they must feel Gottula is on the upswing for significant improvement in his second year of starting. Nebraska has been focused on guys who are more RT candidates (looking back with hindsight) which might be a good bang for the buck strategy since RT is not considered the same kind of premium position that LT is, so RTs tend to be cheaper.
I also doubt that if we are actually pursuing Fitzpatrick that we look at him as a guy who will ever start. He is more a quality depth OL piece that should be fairly cheap. As I noted last night in a post in another thread his story of the last two months suggests that Ohio St blew up their tackle position by signing portal replacements for the two graduating Sr tackles, which caused their two back-ups to portal themselves. These two guys portalling, in turn, has Ohio St looking for a third portal tackle candidate. Fitzpatrick did not benefit and move up the tackle depth chart - instead, he got moved to back-up guard in the playoffs after being a tackle his entire playing career. I am guessing he wants to stay in the mix as a tackle. This line of thinking is very, very similar to what you lay out above.

I know people like to think we were tampering as we all want to be aggressive. I think that could indeed be the case with Fitzpatrick, but I tend to doubt it is with Pritchett. I doubt Pritchett stayed put till the last day when he got our go ahead to portal because FF fell through. It is much more likely Bama was unwilling to increase his comp after a poor year statistically (Formby has probably shown he can take the spot, he is a year younger, and he is from Tuscaloosa). Pritchett and his agent also know Pritchett has a tarnished reputation from his personal mistakes and that Bama fans are looking at him as "the SEC's worst starting tackle", as one guy quoted a Bama fan friend on another board. My guess is that his agent has been shopping him, and they decided on the last possible day was that the portal interest was good and leaving to start fresh was the best route.

This, of course, means he is far from a lock to come to Nebraska. There will be a number of suitors. He will be a top dollar RT.

It could even be that Ohio St is pursuing him, which sort of links these two guy's fates.

These are the two portal tackles Ohio St has taken so far (there is no sign I have seen we pursued Walker or Michalski, the two Ohio St tackles that entered the portal before Fitzpatrick). Pritchett might believe he could beat Daniels out, I would guess (Onianwa was a LT at Rice, Daniels a RT at Minny):

I wouldn’t even think about taking Firtzpatrick. With the injuries on the o line this year at OSU he didn’t play much. It would be a waste taking him I think.

I'd rather just bring Corc and Teddy back and try our best.

Maybe you'd bring in Fitzpatrick because you no longer have Mazzucca to kick out to tackle as an emergency, but definitely not a priority dude

That said you've got a whole other portal window to figure it out and your spring ball

Nope not sure at this time. But this does go against the picture Rhule himself painted about Boerk during at least one presser.

It’s all about the numbers game I’m sure. Rhule probably likes Boerk, but if a younger guy like Lindenmeyer isn’t far off you’re going to push the older guy out. It’s all business now. The days of Pelini being loyal to players is completely gone. It’s the same for the players to the program.
