Straight up, we have to constantly recruit Nebraska high school kids every where. What's the wash rate though for them? At this point, you know they're going to need to be recruited to keep the local Nebraska donors/coaches/administrators happy, but at the same time, plan for them to be gone in a year or two.
It seems like Rhule is changing and will keep it to a minimum so we aren’t relying on our starting safety being a Gifford special. He is embracing a lot of key changes to win at a consistent and high level.

I don't think Gifford was a charity case or kept around because of anything except his play. He played significantly better in 2023, and was (at the time) a welcome retention for this year. He's just regressed, for whatever reason.

Who actually coached Gifford? Feels like we're going to make the mistake a lot of shitting on some position coach's face for being bad when he doesn't even coach that group.

Like if our edges suck, Bradden is a bus except it's not Bradden, it's Phil Simpson.

We shouldn’t have coached him to miss all those tackles and be slow and white

Yeah man a sixth year senior totally regressed because a guy with 10 years experience coaching NFL DBs started coaching him
I have no idea who coached the rovers. What I can tell you is he didn’t get better tho.

27% of the class was Nebraska kids this year
The hope is with the current changes of making all the necessary moves to win that the percentage going forward will decrease pending a big year in NE hs talent. The 2025 class is expecting 15 transfers along with the 20 high school players. With the expectation that no transfers will be Neb kids the full 2025 class would be 17% NE kids. I am hopeful with the amount of clear non contributors being moved on this offseason. 15-20% of the roster being NE kids would be a healthy balance as long as clear misses and non-performers are moved on if they aren’t working outs. The goal is consistently competition for championships which we can’t do with a ton of charity NE kids.

People arguing that Giff wasn’t below average need to watch the horrific tackling angles and wiffs is very hard to understand. It was unbelievably bad.

Watch at 1:14 and 5:21 as two examples. 13:15 he is the deep safety and double covers and under route giving up a long TD. This is all in one game.

He was maxed out. He had very basic communication busts and basic missed tackles that cost us games. He just wasn’t very good.
6th year players were neat from a seniority standpoint but that’s about it.
If you are a 6th year senior there’s a pretty clear reason why.
All they did was dampen growth of younger guys

I’m not arguing that he didn’t regress, I just don’t think coaching was a factor. My guess is that his lack of athleticism just got exposed more this year and he’s probably dealing with plenty of long term/chronic injuries given the number of snaps he’s played in his career. I just don’t think there is much tread left on the tires at this point.

Agree which was really frustrating to watch him not get benched bc he cost us games.

Sometimes you miss on evaluations. He was a fringe draft guy this time last year no? Seems reasonable they would want to funnel ball carriers toward him and rely on him to quarterback the secondary

He's probably got high level knowledge of scheme. No doubt he was a big film grinder. Hard to bench a kid like that despite his limitations after spending the offseason coaching him and him only specifically on that role

No it’s not. Dana came in and held offensive players accountable and benched Fidone. The back end of the D was very very poor this year. I think this was the last year of that thankfully.
