2024-25 Portal SZN Thread

On3 is using "fuzzy math."

Nebraska has 23 portal rated 3-stars leaving. 18 of those transfers are leaving because they never saw the field.

Nebraska has 13 portal rated 3-stars arriving.

So according to On3's formula, Nebraska got worse by a net of negative 10 three star players, while only gaining one extra 4 star player.

Everyone ready to laugh incessantly?

Jacob Hood is a considered a 3-Star ranked 86 Transfer loss for Nebraska. According to On3, that ranking cancels out Jaylen George from ETSU who has started 27 games before turning 20 years-old and was a 2-Time All SoCon Defensive Player.

Stefon Thompson is considered a 3-star ranked 87 transfer loss for Nebraska. His ranking cancels out Marques Watson-Trent, the Sun Belt Player of the Year.

Another reason why on3 is fucking retarded…. Mainly because of that pos dean though

I think we lost mostly on the edge. Everybody else was dead weight.

Boerkircher, Dowdell and Gbayor would be nice to have back. What holes are the most glaring IYO outside OL?
And I think I actually agree with people more than they are thinking here. The example i've used is Malachi Coleman, he is dinging us pretty bad as a "loss". We think he's going to go to Minnesota and be a Markese Stepp for them. Gopher fans are hoping he comes there and is a Dowdell for them. I get the hope, but he isn't a loss IMO, that room upgraded. Another good example is Umanmielen, he is highly ranked but he was so checked out from wanting to go down south and play with his brother that he was a negative star in Lincoln, so is he really a loss? I don't think so. But keeping Gbayor, Butler, Williams, Boerkircher, etc. would have been great and then all of a sudden I think we are top 15 in the thing we are ranked 38th with.

My biggest concern is DL. We lose all 4 starters there (if you count JACK), and could have kept Butler but he took off. We replaced DE/DT with a no one from Mississippi State and a guy who i'm actually somewhat excited about but no P4 experience (whatever E Tenn St guys name is). That's my main concern. TE worries me, we lose Boerkircher who is actually ranked low and then Fidone is leaning NFL (but maybe he comes back). We basically have to hope for Lindenmeyer to be as good or Nelson to fully recover. RB I think they are waiting to see how the spring shakes out but we gotta have someone there. Johnson, Ives, and true freshmen with walk-ons isn't the answer there IMO. OT we need one more which is odd, but I do appreciate our development there.

QB I can't believe we got a good one in, we did so well there. WR room we absolutely upgraded. I love what came in at LB and DB. Those transfer portal position groups absolutely got better.

Arik Gilbert is on there and counts against us. James Williams is counted as a 4 Star transfer. Nwaneri didn't play last year and went from a 5 Star to a 4 Star. Rhett I don't believe he played either went from a 4 Star to a 3 Star. Ruggeroli didn't play but he's rated higher now as a transfer. I'm sure there is probably more that was just a quick glance.

Need to get @oldred to blow up Dean about these inconsistencies.

Interior DL for me, even though I really like Van Poppel there. I think Lenhardt also gets over his sophomore slump and does well replacing Butler.
DT is a tough position to portal given its price tag and our existing depth. I don’t know if anyone in the portal is an upgrade over Judy, RVP or Cam. Maybe but IDK. I don’t think anyone in the portal who would accept a position in the depth bucket (I.e., the next 25 roster spots after the starting 25 roster spots) are an upgrade over Keona, either. The next person we’d be looking for an upgrade is Goldman. I think we could find someone but not sure what the price would be to do so, and the downstream impacts of bringing in someone at that price to play 40 snaps for the next two years. And by the time they’d be challenging for meaningful snaps, Simpson or Pietrzak should be ready. So, maybe we just work one of them in earlier rather than buy a kid in the portal.

Yeah those big high school classes are still really young next year. Would be nice to have some more proven experience in the portal. Hopefully the spring portal will provide a lot of good options.

Ya, i'm more about you gotta find a starter in the portal there. Them bringing in extra depth at DL wouldn't alleviate my concerns. I always thought the portal could be used for years where you just lose way too many starters that your development/depth behind them can't keep up. I think that is what DL is this year. You will never replace the talent we had there skill for skill (graduated and portal'd), but the only way you have shot to keep similar production is bringing in a stud from somewhere. There were a few, I think Texas Tech grabbed one of them. But I haven't taken a look too deep. You can find some DTs that are similar to the OTs we are excited about IMO.

I'm really shocked at our need for DBs still, we have so many guys there my head is spinning. But I love what we did in the WR room. I actually thought we did a good job recruiting that spot the first two years, but Holgo coming in and saying "nope we got Barney and let's grab other people" is somewhat eye-opening.

I think we have some really good young talent i'm excited about. Van Poppel, Jeudy, and Lenhardt I think you can pencil in as your 1s going into spring ball. And maybe we are just a little spoiled with the DL depth we had this year with Nash and TRob coming back. But unless we grab a starter I don't like the drop off we are getting ready to see there.

Right now interior DL is my only concern. Van Poppel and Davis have tremendous upside but they are a year away at least. I hope they can be serviceable in 2025 or else teams like Michigan, PSU, Minnesota, and Cockeye are going to try to run it down our proverbial throat.

The reason this one aligns closer to 247 is because it only takes into account additions, which I actually think we did a good job at.

The problem is the one we are ranked 38th on it factors not only additions but ALSO what we lost which is where the issue is. Got a couple positions with some holes still.

I think if people would take their feelings out of it, they would understand On3 and 247 are very similar in the ranking for Nebraska when you only factor in additions. But what we lost is not great.
No I think On3 is flawed.

Simple question. Do you think we got better or worse at WR? No nuance, straight up. We clearly did. I’d bet On3 has us as equally to slightly better. It’s pretty clear our wr core will be vastly better.

If we get a receiver that can catch, it’s definitely an improvement over Neyor.
