As the lead EJ Truther if he thinks he has a resume to land at a similar or better spot, e.g. Big Ten starting running back, more power to him.

But when you enter the portal potty, you always have to be prepared for the chances that you're wading into last night's Four Lokos and Taco Bell
Maybe he wants more money, if so, let him see if he gets more. But he averaged over 20 touches a game after DH took over, 23/game in the last two games. Given the style of back he is, he won't get more than that anywhere else and if he did he'd likely get beaten up. The way DH uses him really highlights his 3rd down back potential for the NFL. He's actually in a great spot as far as being used in a manner that highlights his strengths.

I agree there will be better backs in the portal and possibly what we are bringing in.

EJ is a solid back, though I think many of us are so used to seeing inferior RB play we are inflating his overall ability. If we are serious and have the money, there will be 20 other backs in the portal equal to or better than EJ.
This is where I’m at.

I like EJ. I’d love for him to stay, but in the grand scheme of things he’s an above average RB that we could likely find a replacement for.

Famous last word, I know…

Yeah. I don't really understand why he'd look at the new OC and a big time increased role and think he can do better elsewhere.

I just don't see anyone who will pay him more than Nebraska

I guess I've landed on the opinion that when it comes to your coaching staff the most important characteristic you now need is to have one superstar talent evaluator for each side of the ball and then probably two "salesmen" to attract recruits from the portal.

These skills have jumped ahead of talent development. Why waste 2-3 years developing a guy when you can just buy what you need ready made? Like why buy the ingredients for a pizza when you can get one cooked for you and delivered? We are all worried that Emmett Johnson might leave but I imagine we could replace him with someone similar or better by the end of the week.

Then you just need a coach like Dana to be the Xs and Os guy. Of course development won't go away completely, I'm just saying it's further down the list than it used to be.

Disclaimer: I don't like this reality. I liked football the way it was before. But things change and they didn't need my permission to do that changing. These thoughts are just me spitballing random ideas while I'm bored on break at work.
I think those talent evaluator's are now in the back office and not the coaches on the field. We're seeing giant staffs put together for transfer eval and high school eval, a general manager and a person that acts as the liaison between the NIL and the program.

Yep, college teams are basically mini-NFL teams now.

Maybe even a motivational speaker.

If I am EJ there is no chance I come back if the position coach doesn't change. He was clearly the best back two years in a row and got buried on the depth chart for most of the year and under utilized last year when he was inserted in the starting lineup due to injury.

Devil's advocate, he was an -OR- on the depth chart a lot of that time, wouldn't his usage have been dictated at least in part by Satt as OC? Especially as when the OC changed, his usage greatly increased, with the same RB coach there.

If the OR thing was justified I would agree with you, but when it comes to running the ball and catching it out of the backfield it clearly wasnt. I get that his pass blocking grade isnt good and that may limit you some but the whole idea that Gabe Irvin got carries before him is a joke.

The RB's have ALL sucked since the Frost years either due to a lack or coaching or they don't have the patience or vision to see the seams for running the ball. If EJ leaves, so be it. I'm sure there are just as good if not better backs in the portal.

Maybe it was justified under the Scatfense but not under the Holgfense.

At least from what Rhule described, he wanted the offense to be Cockeye, which he got but substantially less effective which is impossible. Dowdell makes more sense there where you block the run and he gets in the whole (at least theoretically)

The Holgfense wants to utilize playmakers in space in 1:1 matchups which is much more EJs skillset.

I'm not defending Scat. He fucked this all up not building an offense for the dudes he had or apparently building 11 different ones, but they're different backs

EJ leaving also confuses me a little.
I don’t see him as a guy that’s going to have a ton of suiters in the portal. He had a good last couple games sure, but he doesn’t have a whole lot of rap for a soon to be junior?
Unless he’s just looking for a full time job regardless of conference
